I've got this one... Chassis number is 553164...uk registered 23 / 05 / 1984. Just bought a late 84 B plate with the same early quirky bits. . .left hand drive wipers, GTi badge on the wings, 1/4 door windows.
Dan: Aye E-XXXXXX to VW means 1984 and F to 85, though date wise in reality they run from august 83 to july 84, and aug 84 to jul 85. your build date is in august 84, they made 43028 cars that month which works out to 1388 a day, so from that it was probably built on the 27th mr hillclimber: yours was made in Feb 84, so took a while for VW to sell it for some reason. They made 67888 that month which works out at 2341 per day (productivity gone up, well done Wolfsburg ) works out to probably have been made on the 26th of that month MacColl: Yours was also made Feb 84, on the 22nd so just pipping mr hillclimber to be the oldest in this thread so far
Well done RJ and many thanks! Prob hung around being white?...I'd imagine red or black to have been more popular being the early eighties. Can I have a prize for the least number plate digits!.. I've been in two minds to keep or sell...not touched it in the 3 years I've had it...saved it from being broken by a friend who..breaks them...popped in to say hello and came home owning my first mk2 after just seeing it sat there. It's complete and original apart from the wheels, exhaust and glass sunroof. .one reason i nearly didn't buy it but figured i could re skin the roof if i ever did anything with it...which i think i will now. It runs well, has about 140k on the clock, so i reckon some sympathetic TLC wouldn't hurt...I'm not sure they warrant full on high budget re builds yet but I think the time will come...or maybe it has...right now?
A quick check shows it to have been registered in Exeter, 45 miles from my home town in Plymouth. It could well be the then mint car we use to see around locally 20 years ago, just before I bought my MK1 and my best mate bought his B plate Mk2. .which I've just bought off him. Spooky...my "new" one..B61 BDV is also Exeter registered!
Any further info here? I have 2 early 1984 mk 2's... My Gti chassis number begins with 553 and is just under the one already mentioned that was previously the 2nd oldest... I also have a mk2 van that begins 555... which although not a gti was built roughly a day later... I have no proof but have been led to believe that it was the vw motor show vehicle and the first owner is indeed recorded as being vw uk...??? I'm intrigued! Anyone have any more info on these earliest known cars to share? Cheers!
sounds really interesting and would be great if could be confirmed, hopefully someone can offer an insight
Nice to see an early A reg in Oz. Still in use ? Thought I'd post the latest pics of the almost completed restoration on this thread :- https://m.facebook.com/story.php?st...9335072700,10156609335117700]:page_insights.{"31425982699"%3A%7B"role"%3A1%2C"page_id"%3A31425982699%2C"post_context"%3A%7B"story_fbid"%3A10156609336432700%2C"publish_time"%3A1532182045%2C"story_name"%3A"EntStatusCreationStory"%2C"object_fbtype"%3A266%7D%2C"actor_id"%3A31425982699%2C"psn"%3A"EntStatusCreationStory"%2C"sl"%3A4%2C"dm"%3A%7B"isShare"%3A0%2C"originalPostOwnerID"%3A0%7D%2C"targets"%3A%5B%7B"page_id"%3A31425982699%2C"actor_id"%3A31425982699%2C"role"%3A1%2C"post_id"%3A10156609336432700%2C"share_id"%3A0%7D%5D%7D%7D&__tn__=%2AW-R

But, see post above:- Milkandtwo VIN ...........553??? Location ?? Status ??
To add to your collection! Mine has the chassis number of: WVWZZZ19ZEW579414 The v5 says it was first registered on the 16.05.1984. I’ve owned it since 14.09.2007. Located in Somerset.
So, we have a new old one ! Looks like oldest, second oldest and third oldest retain their positions and Petechampo goes to 4th oldest and now mine fifth oldest but, not heard yet from Milkandtwo which may top the lot?
Mine is currently located in Nebraska and the current status is in the middle of a vr6 24v swap but going into storage for a year starting in November due to military obligations.
I was a little bit worried about publicly writing my chassis numbers on here purely from a security point of view but having seen the response to this thread I'd really like to push it forward and learn more and if long established members are openly saying theirs then I'm sensing a level of trust here so here goes... My mk2 gti is an atlas grey 3dr none sunroof... It has 83k on it and 3 previous owners and is registered as A528JWD. It needs a light restoration but runs well and has been dry stored in my collection since I bought it in maybe 2004. The chassis number ends 553002 which theoretically makes it the second oldest RHD gti known. The mk2 golf van I have is a mars red car which originally had a 1.3 petrol engine but I have converted it using a mk2 gtd donor... This car is in a similar condition but with lower mileage and the previous owner who I bought it from was a Porsche dealership called Paragon in Kent. The previous recorded keeper on the logbook was Volkswagen UK. The chassis number of this car is 555902 but interestingly it wasn't registered until over a year after it was built and was registered as B250SKN... There are several early publicity shots of a mars red rhd mk2 van and although unproven I believe this was my car and it was probably a display vehicle either at VWs headquarters or in a dealership...
Thats interesting info on the van, pretty good chance you're correct So based on my rough calculations they were probably built on following days, the 26th and 27th of February 1984
