Good to see that that the car is up and running well. Do you have any further info the problems you were having with the driveshafts? Was this snapping of the actual shafts or shearing off the CV splines? As you are still 4 stud I guess your CV's are standard MK1/MK2 GTI CV's? Are these OEM parts? When I have looked into this, the only upgrade I could find with a proper GKN motorsport CV was in VR6 size and means moving to 5 stud drive flanges or at least, 5 stud and re-drilling for 4x100 to keep the wheels. I have been having problems with breaking the CV splines, shafts have been ok. Thanks
Great thread forge Are the chassis upgrades for sale as I am building a mk1 wide track with berg arches for the VAG. And did you get the rear beam toe stabilizers from SCCH? Thanks daz.
@16valver The driveshafts snapped because twice we found ourselves in the situation where we had to weld shafts together to get the car to an event, which was less than ideal (Mk1 hub one end, quaife box and then diesel box the other). We ended up with custom made driveshafts that we didnt brake and are still on the car now. CV joints are actually not even OEM, they are just the 'premium' versions frm GSF. One failed but that was donw to a split gaitor letting all the grease out - and even then it was still working just noisy. So yes to answer your question we are still using 4x100 Golf Mk1 hubs. @dazbedford the rear beam toe adjusters were made here in house, along with the towers which we fabricated and welded to the rear beam too before we had the whole lot powdercoated. Other than that, everything else was off the shelf - Eibach anti-roll bars, and KW coilovers all round with Powerflex mounts. We could do another rear beam, but you would need to supply it, and the cost may be prohibitive as its not something we do everyday so all the parts would have to be handmade. Check out our video from the Forge Action Day at Castle Combe a few months ago http://vimeo.com/76590702
Hi Chris, I was just looking about for stronger axle/CV options the other day and spotted these blokes. http://www.driveshaftshop.com/import-axles/volkswagen?p=2 Might be worth having a chat to them if you're still in the States. They look like they've got some interesting ideas. I blew an EMPI 90mm outer CV last week, they go off with quite a bang.
I was thinking re: the video, yeah thats nice, gives you a taste of the day, but it's this modern style of changing the camera every few seconds (usually set to something like dubstep lol) so you don't really see very much. Is there a full in-car video of the Forgemobile available?
While you're at it could we have an update as to how the cars going and what you guys have been doing , please
Hey Guys, we had a new server so all the links were broken to pics. we have now fixed this. ok, so this is what we have been up to with the Mk1. Since the Retro Rides show we had a photo shoot with Bryn Musselwhite for a Speed Hunters feature.
The car had a few other features and then went off to Forge America. It spent about a year over there going to many shows. Heres some pics from SOWO.
