Hi i'm wanting to fit power steering to my '84 mk2 Gti. What would you recommend-a standard 2nd hand setup, or i have seen the Easysteer electric kit for around £300 + getting it fitted.

What would i require for a standard install-is any of it available new off the shelf-and what sort of price roughly would you expect it to cost to buy-the car is getting done up at the mo so could be fitted up whilst it's being done.

    Many thanks, John.

I'd prefer the OE style, but that's just me.
Rack and clamps, pump, pipes, pulleys, reservoir, bulkhead Grommet, steering shaft etc... Quite a few bits needed

Thanks sounds like quite a lot of bits-that's why i was leaning towards the electric Easysteer kit seems a lot cheaper & neater...

Is the electric one a purpose made kit, or a component set to modify your original stuff?
Corsa bits usually used and a control box to run the electrical side of it all saw an old rover 100 with it on, very neat, guy built it all himself then bought the box off ebay.
It has a volume type switch to control the rate/feel and not 'speed' controlled like a normal pas or the genuine electric original fitment as in the corsa or mgf epas, so you have to dial to your settings depending on parking or driving the car.

The last time I enquired about the easy steer kit it was a lot more than £300?

Component kit you need to modify with your existing setup.

Don't see the point ??,factory parts fit up and achieve the same result, the only issue is the uni-joint boot with is a rather expensive part and for powersteer you need it when you change over.
From memory I think you need the short boot when you go to PS ?,lots of other parts needed so buy good used parts from an engine less car with the system still intact from a breaker or from a seller on here.
Well worth doing as IMO the manual steering is somewhat heavy when not underway, makes parking harder for sure as I know from having 2 non PS cars.
    Good luck.

Ah, I was enquiring about the ready to bolt in set up. If you aren’t doing this yourself then the ready made up column may save you a lot over labour charges by your mechanic.

That's quite a bulk to fit in, unsure of how much room there is to do it, thought that's for mk2 escort primarily, so how much would be used.
Have a look on YouTube at rotbox metalwork and they build their own set up for a caddy, corsa based electric one.
I've got a mk3 set up with mk2 track rods in the garage that I've not got round to fitting yet, but the uj from mk3 fits late mk2 only so unfortunately not yours.
If there's a solution to the uj it would open more avenues such as mk3 cabrio, mk2 caddy, ibiza etc to source one.
Even fitting an electric pump like polo or clio, saxo etc could be used then.

Dodgy just use a mk2 power steering uj onto the mk3 power steering rack, well this worked on my F reg mk2 driver when I fitted a 1995 mk3 golf gti power steering rack and subframe etc.

Was asking as the price of a used setup seems to be quite a lot-considering it'll be all used parts.

Aye, I've got all my bits, was suggesting it for mexeco, I think it's the early or late column different on the mk2, hence late ones and mk3 are swappable, I do know of a mk2 jetta set up, but the uj is missing I think.

Typical lol as yes mines an early one A reg '84. So would need a corresponding setup from an '84 model-or modified/optional parts from something else? Was hoping for an easy swap hence the bolt in electric kit and stock look.

Right just spoke with him-it's £700 for a ready built column ready to fit, or £950 fitted. If i go this way i will get it fitted myself. The standard option will require all the parts-probably used & unknown, and a lot of work to fit. Is it engine out job?

I use the Citroen Saxo Hydro electric pumps connected to the Std VW PAS rack, that way you get a quick rack as well as PAS. You have to use an adjustable motor controller on the Hydro pump though, otherwise its far too light and the rack drags the car across the road under power and makes it very twitchy. No kits available though, developed it myself. The Saxo pump part is simple enough to get running etc, but the motor controller is bespoke.

You could buy a whole MK3 golf for a £1000 (or less) and use the PAS, break the car and make all your money back and then some. It’s what we did when we transplanted our engine.

Don't want to faff about doing that though-having to store it/break it/sell all the bits etc.etc....

The uj is approximately 60 on ebay, some 35, some 75 so varies, may be cheaper from other sources admittedly, plus I'm unsure of the changeover point or part number for the uj you'll need.
Racks are easier to get from various cars, van etc as mentioned, then choose to either go standard or electric pump and control box etc.
New track rods and boots cost me about 30 quid and about 20 minutes to swap over.

Are there breakers near you? Or what area are you in case someone can point you towards one, I know of 2 mk3s in Somerset, plus a full mk2 rack kit minus uj.

Suppose its a case of seeing which is best cost options for you, availability of bits and the ease of fitting for you.

Corsa bits seem quite cheap, but if have to get your column altered by someone else may be quite costly.

I have altered columns in the past, including a minor with metro/mgf hybrid set up, full working airbag and restraint system in it.
Just a case of belt and braces, extreme good welding, sleeving and doweling.

On a side note, @TonyB how do you find the saxo pump, thought there was a phase where they were a little problematic, burning out, may have been the 16v ones but was quite a while ago.
