A lot of the links on the old 2L 16v thread, originally posted by GVK, got broken over time, probably due to forum upgrades, so here's a new attempt at the same thing, as it was a fine useful thread when it was working.

Please add your links, if they're not already included. the next set of posts are copied from the original, where the links still work, and I've edited out a lot of the conversation to get to the most useful info.

ABF/KR/9A differences

Rods are 15mm longer (159mm vs. 144mm)
Block is 16mm taller (236mm vs. 220mm)
Different cams
Narrower intake ports on ABF/9A than KR/PL (MH Edit - due to bigger water jacket)
Better exhaust ports on ABF/9A than KR/PL
ABF uses 35mm long valve guides, KR/PL uses 38mm
ABF uses different inlet and exhaust valves (95,5mm and 97,95mm long) than KR/PL (95,5mm and 98,2 mm long)
ABF uses same spring retainers as VR6
Longer cambelt for the 16.5mm higher block

EDIT:
ABF/Late 9A/6A has 27mm diameter exhaust valves on a 27mm seat.
KR/ Most 9A/6A has 28mm diameter exhaust valves on a 27mm seat (sodium cooled valves)

ABF has one set of holes to bolt the dizzy on. Most(?) others have two, for greater adjustment.

Audi oil bracket issues

The mounting pattern for the oil filter bracket/crankcase breathers does change around 1991-ish. If you look at the bolt pattern on the oil filter bracket, the top bolt is shifted over to one side on the later ones compared to an early bracket. The good news is that the bracket is pretty much universal across all the 1.6-2.0 engines from 90-96, mine came off a 8v passat, so they're not hard to come across in the scrappy.

I did'nt realise that the blocks were actually different looking at the ETKA this afternoon I noticed that the code for the block fitted in the Coupe (053 103 101H) is the same for both the 6a Engine and later ACE, However the block for 6A in the Audi 80 is 053 103 101E I only quickly glanced so I'll have another look if I get chance later.

I would fit a new water pump, if it leaks soon after you'll have to strip all the AC and PAS pump bracketry off to replace it.

If you remove the a/c and PAS pumps on the ABF but want to keep the 6 vee pulley system with it's automatic tensioner, you'll need a completely different fanbelt. I tried three sizes and the best fit was a 987mm long 6 vee pulley.

Yeah, hoping to get away without opening the A/C system as the compressor and mountings etc should all work with the 6a just the same as the KR. That's the theory anyway, will let you know in a few weeks if it works that way in practice...!
