Spent the day doing some parts de-rusting and a little painting. Just to try and be ready for when the rear axle turns up. So that it goes on the car and not in my living room.. I also managed to acquire some NOS VW small bumper indicators for the price of cheaper versions... they look nice and clean and will replace the broken ones I have. Lastly I managed to source a tool for tightening the front suspension top nut whilst holding the suspension with an Allen key. It is an oxygen sensor socket and for £8 delivered off ebay was good for me
Not much progress, too cold. Had the rear disc bearings out and new Febi ones In. The discs are fine so i have given them a spray to look nice. That is sad i know. The rear axle still isnt back from powder coatiing but I need to sort the brake lines anyway. It is just too cold outside
1-0 to me. Although the tool wasnt a perfect fit and needed packing. The nearside is going to be a pig due to the brake system bracket
2-0 to me. I managed to get this side done using the threaded bar, some deep sockets and my brake piston tool. Shame the one piece of kit I bought for this was not perfect. And I remembered to put a new rubber bush on the anti-roll bar. I shall try and get a day off this week so that I can fit it and get it out of the spare room...
Seems a lot of rear beam refurbishment going on at moment, looking at ebay you guys should start a business!
I had noticed people getting on with this. For £40 I was happy to have the beam and all of its mounting parts etc blasted and powder coated. Tristan I agree with going for a later upgrade, but looking is making my brain hurt to go mk3 or mk4. I did upgrade to mk4s on my corrado and they have always been fine. As I need all new hoses it isn't a problem to go banjo mk4, but.... I need to check if the handbrake cables would need swapping and the slider pins on my carriers too
This was how I got my last bush in.... the bas###d. Nice that I did not need to remove the powder coating from inside
Got the axle fitted. New bearings in the discs and repainted carriers. I gave the brake shields an extra coating of paint and fitted an electricians 25mm blind rubber grommet to the bottom hole I have ordered mk3 rear calipers as they were cheaper and keeping it slightly original ...hmmm anyway, new hoses and rear axle brake lines on the way. I had to order pre-bent as I dont have decent ones to copy Also waiting on the brackets for the hard line to caliper hose as mine were the smaller underneath versions The one concern I have is that the inner of my caliper is close to the disc, not an even spacing at both sides. !!!! Onwards and upwards
Received the brake calipers, but too late to fit now as the wind is biting outside ... I opted for the mk3 version for cost and standard hoses no other reason really. I am surprisingly impressed with the packaging and quality of these. They even come with a sachet of lube grease and 2 COPPER WASHERS. What are they for? Anyone... Still waiting for the other parts to arrive b4 this can all be put back together. Although I need to get another wheel painted and tyres put on 2 so that it will move. I will give myself a month!!
Are they normal hose or the Mk4 type with the banjo connector which requires two washers to sandwich it in place?
Im at the exact same stage with my car. These callipers look pretty decent and I’m wondering if I should have gone down this route instead of refurbishing mine. They are currently in pieces and I’m not looking forward to putting them back together haha.
