recently purchased a second hand 2L 8v engine, having trouble identifying the block
Block height measured from centre line of crank to top of block 238mm
Number stamped on block 048103021, also 1.7L raised cast no above distributor
    on other side large 2.0.
Also does anyone recognise the flywheel, came attached to the engine not sure if it's vw,
aluminium construction overall size 255mm diameter (not including ring gear) and friction plate 187 mm diameter, dimensions may not be 100%, measured with a tape

Looks like a 2E tall block.
4 window dizzy and no crank sensor.
What is the head number? Std 2E will have a raised section above the inlet port for the injectors.

No idea of the flywheel though. 02A style after market? Or maybe Hewland transaxle knowing the circles you move in. ;)

And it looks like it has a fancy intermediate shaft for driving an external oil pump too. (like the ford crossflow ones).
The sump looks modified with that small pipe sticking out the front and no bulge for internal oil pump.
Breather hole plugged with core plug.
    No dipstick.
Spigot bearing in the end of crank too which is not oem fitment to 2E.
    Water pump outlets blocked too.
Single lug on head for alternator tensioner bracket means it is an early mech tappet head.
Water outlet off head only has the large outlet and no provision for the small bypass pipe to water pump.
Water pump is ribbed belt driven.
    Single seater I am thinking.
    Is this a quizz?
    You must know more.

I think you have something quite special there.
Mk3 8v gti is a likely block origin but the head is wrong and there are several mods that suggest there may be something nice inside if you remove cam cover and sump. :p

As expected that head number ties in with an early 1.8 DX GTI Mech tappet engine.

    Mk3 2E with a 1.7l marking? It's an odd one, that's for sure!

That is just a casting reference TSC, it must be batch dependant as the other 2E blocks I have just looked at have weird unrelated numberings too.
2.0 on the rear of block is right though.

Sump looks really shallow or maybe it's just the pics - dry sump system?

does the long no cast on the block mean anything or is it just a casting no ?

It ties in with the 2E blocks I have.
The ones I have seen are marked with the date above the breather core plug blank.
Take the cam cover off. You know you want too. ;)

Strange that. You do get mech tappet carb heads though. I will go and double check my part numbers as I have both in the shed.;)

Both the mech tappet heads in the shed have the same number as yours. One of mine is a DX injection head and the other is a carb head.
My carb head has the second lug for the later alternator bracket though, unlike yours.

Well that is far from std isn't it.
Under follower tappet shims and a very lumpy cam too.
The number on the port side to the left is non std so may be useful info.

And are those 48s, or even 50s?
No choke mechanism on them. ;)
