I dont mean i want to open the boot and put it in. I want it wired up so it works as it should.

Pics and info please, engines out this week so that should make it easier.

Very heavy duty cables as you dont want any voltage drop

    agreed.

Go to a scrappy and find a car which has its battery in teh boot as standard and rip out the wiring.

Some BMW's have a battery in the boot, If your worried about leaks you could use something like an optima "dry cell" battery

And what about connecting all my wires to them?

First, you'll need a sealed battery. You can't use an ordinary battery, and the vapours that are released when it is charging are explosive - and it's an MOT fail. The special sealed batteries for this application are not cheap - about 3 times the price.

Secondly you are going to need a pair of really thick cables to get enoug energy into the starter. This site has lots us useful bits an pieces. I guess a good place to get the thick cable is to buy some truck jumper leads (the really heavy duty ones).

It's not an easy job. Are you sure you want to do it?

On my dad's Audi A6 and my Passat, the battery is normal acid battery but has a 12" pipe coming from it which goes through the floorpan and vent any fumes to the outside of the car

    Yep, i'm sure.

There are 3 wires onto my bettery +ve terminal, i'm not extending them all so how/where do i join them to the thick wires from the boot?

My brother did it to his rally Lada. It's sat in the driveway but I don't know where the keys are to have a look...

He basically took the existing live wire and attached it to a metal/rubber 'cotton reel' type thing mounted to the inner wing - so all the short wires that attach to the battery terminal go to that. Then a big wire from that to the battery in the boot.

You can see it on the bottom left of this pic

The black lead is a substitute for the original live cable, and teh red one goes through the car to the boot.

If you need to know more, I can find out this evening when he comes home from work!

Oh, and the engine bay is a lot neater now, that was an 'in progress' pic about a year ago!

I can't find any pics but the arrangement he has in the boot is basically two pieces of angle iron bolted to the floor - wide enough apart to hold the battery - and long bolts that have hooks on the ends... The hooks go through holes drilled into the floor brackets, and then up through a flat piece of bar to hold the battery down. That make sense? It's something like that anyway

The one in the boot of the Lada is a standard battery - I just asked about the fumes etc, and apparently it's not a problem because the rear bulkhead of the Lada is firewalled (rally car). Guess it'd be tricky firewalling off the boot of a Mk2! And anyway, old Beetles have normal batteries under the rear seat and Minis have them in the boot so I can't see a problem there!!

And the bobbin thing is just a random exhaust mount...
