this is a guide how to replace the oil seal in the 16v distributor and is all so handy if you have to change the hall sender it has always amazed me how much a new or recon distributor is they start a about 80 it is usually only the oil seal that wrong with them and the seal only cost 2.30 hear are some of the things you will need * pin punch * hammer * scriber * feeler gauges * two sockets * Vaseline or oil first you need to remove spring clip round the distributor drive not all distributor have this then you need to punch the dowel pin out with a pin punch off the right size about 2.5mm you will need to line it up as below it all so pays to mark the shaft and distributor drive at this point now remove the drive and washers dress and rags on the hole thru the shaft and then gently drift the shaft out remove shaft and washers now using a scriber with tip bent with a short 90 degree bend like below remove the cap washer that is on top of the seal by putting the bent tip between washer and the seal then carefully tap it out now do the same with the seal you will have one side then the other to get the seal out evenly now you should be left with this now you clean all the parts and polish the shaft where the seal runs now you are ready to put the new seal in place the seal in the bore then tap it in evenly with a sockets just smaller than the bore tap it in till it is all the way home now you want to put cap washer back on line up the serrated edge with the old marks on the bore then tap it home with a sockets tap round the edge and not in the middle so not to distort the washer now place the two washers back on the shaft the fibre one then the shim then smear Vaseline or oil on the shaft make sure there are no rags on the hole of the shaft now push the shaft thru the seal put the washer back on then put the distributor drive and line up with the marks you made and line up with the slot in the body and punch the pin in make sure the pin is centred in the shaft then fit the spring using the feeler gauges to slide the spring other the slot you can now fit a new o ring the the body and fit the dust cover and rotor arm you are now finished and ready to refit the distributor if you marked it before you removed it you can just line it back up if not you need to re-time it the seal is 12x19x5 you can use single or double lip seals i used single lip distributor body o ring the o ring size is internal diameter is 37.5mm and the cross section is 3mm bs4418 0375-30 http://www.allianceseals.co.uk/BS4518-Metric-O-Rings.php hear are some handy links http://vwdoc1.tripod.com/16VDistSealReplace.html http://www.gti16v.com/16vfaq.htm http://www.ffp.fi/index.php?mid=2&pid=115 http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3536766 http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/ MUSHY 15/01/10 16v dizzy

Great guide. Just speaking to these guys - are they the place you ordered from? There's a min order charge. Anywhere they can be bought from individually?
yeh, here http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=0&sort=2a&search_3fields=1&keywords1=12&keywords2=19&keywords3=5&x=0&y=0
The difference between R21 and R23 Oil seals is the the number of lips on the seal, R21 and R23 both have one sealing lip, the R23 has an additional dust lip to help prevent foreign matter getting onto the sealing lip. Ideal for a motorcycle wheel where rain and grit may be driven against the seal, not necessary for engines etc. where this level of protection is not needed. Ah, I've got the inner seals now, two actually as I've got 2 to do. Where does the fibre washer come in? Can you pick up the relevant pic?
