Anyone know how to identify early mk1 engines, 1.1 to 1.3? Reason is i am not sure if engine has bin replaced. log book states 1.1 but m8 thinks its a 1.3
    any idea?

don't think there's any major differences between early 1100 and 1300. later 1300 hydraulic engines have 3 bolts along cam cover

Engine code is on the lip of the block behind the alternator top bracket.

'top of my head you're looking for FA, GG or GF.

Can't equate these to engine sizes right now. Anyone?

My mate had a polo with the same 1.1 engine as the golf, new carb and a few other bits and he was getting a 100+ on the speedo and seeing off nova SRs back in the day!

Dont think they are *that* slow as they are quite light

    Yep - 31 PICT is 1.1.

I wouldn't say there's anything nippy about them though. Formel E engine perhaps?
