my current unit it getting old and although the sound is still fine, the connection for my ipod has finally given up (worded another way the kids broke it!:()

so i would like to replace it with a unit that will interface with both my Ipod which uses the older apple connector and my iphone 5 which has the newer connection....

i have always preferred Alpine head units, although i had had all sorts.

any recommendations, i dont want to spend a fortune, so something like 200.

Just go for the jvc units that you use the apple cable with to usb on front. Most are apple compatible and can control iPhone. Plus the good ones you can change all the colours and auto dim when you put lights on.

Mine is a perfect match to the green dash on mk2 and auto dims when I put headlights on. You can even chose the shade of green !!!

I'm using an alpine head unit that I've had for about 10 years! I just use a 8 eBay cable plugged into the cd changer port and run the unit on the aux setting, works perfectly with my 5 using my lightening adapter and if I want to use an older iPhone/iPod I just remove the adapter.

I've got a fully loaded Sony head unit in my Mk4 atm.

Aux input, USB port, Bluetooth handsfree connection, 3 x pre outs, ect ect.

    Great sound output too.

Get one with Bluetooth. Then you don't need to worry about any connectors.

I've always found the Alpines with full iPod control to be pretty good. Dedicated cable plugs in the back, so can be routed discreetly. Then you'll just need the the 30-pin/Lightening adaptor to switch between the two devices. As Russ says, they're available for under 200 (I payed ~165 for the last one I bought from Car Audio Direct)

I just have an 80 Sony CD with front USB and chuck a load of music on a 16GB/32GB USB stick and put it on random!

I was going to go for the 178bt but it has the USB on the rear, I wanted it on the front for ease of access however it does have a better display.

Both cracking units, only real problem is that there are so many settings/options I'm always messing with it :)
