    1.6 Gti engine EG prefix.
Engine had been standing for some years before it was fitted to my car.

Engine now runs well. Settling down with use. Only done about 60 miles since 2011.

When engine first starts I hear a slight rattle coming from the top end.
It lasts for no more that a second or two and then disappears completely.

When engine is started during rest of day - no noise.
It only occurs when engine has been standing for an hour or so.

General oil pressure is good. Light goes out when cranking and stays out for a few
    seconds when engine stopped.

The engine oil is a good fully synthetic which I think is SAE 10-40

    Is the oil the problem?

I have an original V.A.G. Service manual which recommends SAE 20-50

I tend to avoid the rattle by firing up the engine, immediately switching off and then restarting.
If I do this no noise.

    Any idea's or suggestions please.

    Thanks

EG is a solid lifter head, so its not the hydraulic tappets. Next up for suspicion is the big ends

    Thanks for that
The 'rattle' is definitely top end though.
    Not a great problem
