    Hi folks,

Having a bit of a situation with a rear gearbox mount on my 02J trying to get it all bolted in to my Mk1.

I have an Epytec rear mount which I have been informed is the correct item for an 02J in a Mk1 but I have a gap of 24mm between both brackets...

    Rear Epytec 02J mount:

    Both side mount bushes have been pressed in like this;

Has anyone else had this issue or is there a simple solution?

has the front mount been fitted yet? it looks like the engine could be tipped back a bit for the rear to line up correctly?

I thought those rubbers go in the other way so the weight or bolt is sitting on the rubber. This would then drop everything down.

ah yes I think you're right, I was thinking the wrong way round when I was looking at the mounts. boy #2 kept us up half the night so it was too early in the morning for thinking

I'm pretty sure he has the rubbers the correct way, with the weight of the engine and box on the mount the bolt should then be central in the mount..

I'm using the Bugpack bush inserts which fill in the voids of the OE bush, if this is what might be causing the problem?

Look like this ("James V" photo):

Unless the OE bushes need pressing in 'upside down'...? (The inlet manifold looks like it'll be close to the underside of the bonnet..)

    That could cause the problem.

I remember years and years and years ago when Bugpack started selling those they were pitched as a way to revive worn out bushes, also the modern bushes are much much harder than they were 'back in the day'... based on the fact that the way I used to be able to tell between normal and diesel inserts was to try and move the central boss by hand, if it moved it was normal, there's no way I could move the bosses in the last few inserts I've fitted..

Can the gearbox bracket be fitted on the other holes, the ones the long bolts aren't poking through?

How it is now but with the bugpak rear poly bush and OE floor mount:

This is how it looks with the bolt holes lining up in both plates, the top of the bracket doesn't sit well and pushes the bracket out a little but none of the holes really line up at all:

These next three photos are taken off the internet and are not mine....

How I wished it looked, similar/same mount as what I have, unsure if it's an 02A or 02J gearbox:

An 'uprated' rear gearbox mount (note the alignment with the 'tab' on the gearbox):

This may just be the angle of the photo but the rear bracket looks like the same design as the above but deceptively taller looking:

I have ordered a new rear mount, which is an uprated mount specifically for an '02J in a Mk1' so I'll have to update when it arrives and see if it solves the issue or not....

    Hi,

    My bracket looks like this:

    image.jpg5.jpg

And your rubber mounts are pressed in fine too.

    Update:

I have now received the uprated rear gearbox mount.
The height of the lowest bolt hole isn't too dissimilar.

With the rear mount bolted on, things were looking promising!
(This is with no front mount attached though and the AGU throttle body being very close to being the other side of the bonnet!)

With the front mount bolted on....
(Which also helped to bring the height of the throttle body down to a safer level...)

... things went backwards and I was back to having a gap again!

    It's getting mega frustrating :(

Have you tried it with the stock 020 front gearbox mount? That is what I use in my mk2 Scirocco with an 02a box.

Not sure it will help any because I'm too tight to buy pre-made mounts and made my own to suit where the engine sat in the bay. But might be worth a try.

haynes has some engine photos which show the side mounts as per your pics so as above all fine there! I'd also try to get a stock rear setup too bolt both the stock mounts on then swap the rear then the front to see which of your brackets is incorrect front or rear. (or if its a problem with the side brackets!)

Some photos with the OE mounts switched in.

    OE front stubber mount fitted:

    HRP rear mount:

OE rear mount with Bugpak bush:

The mounting on the front cross member is adjustable so I played with this and the result at the rear is like this:

This all looked ok but then I was worried about the height of the inlet manifold and clearance with the bonnet:

Offering the bonnet on and the result:

The front cross member mount may have a tiny bit more adjustment to push the inlet manifold down but then this would have the adverse effect on gapping the rear mount due to the pivot point on the side mounts.

right what about putting the uprated stuff on, then making a spacer up to fill the gap at the back :)

I've gone with your suggestion John and refitted the uprated front and rear mounts, thought I'd be on the home run and the inlet manifold would sit low enough.

    However...

Pulling the engine as far down at the front as it'll go:

I say as far as it'll go as then the downpipe is hitting the floor just under/behind the steering rack. [8(]
