Hi, Here is a picture of the profile of the door seals that came in a box of bits with the car It would be most helpful if I could see a photograph of this type of seal fitted to a door particularly the right angle corners at the bottom and top of the door. Not at all sure these are the correct seals. Thanks
those look like mk2 seals, certainly not mk1. The mk1 has a plain beading in the door hole which is just to tidy up the metal lip, 171867365B https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/door-aperture-trim-171867365b-12636-p.asp and the main seal door seal is glued all round the outside of the door itself, 171837911H for 2/3 door and 173837911H for 4/5 door. you need 8 plastic clips 133823717 for a 2/3 door seal as well, and contact adhesive to glue it on. https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk1-golf-door-perimeter-seal-3-door-171837911hr-3725-p.asp or https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk1-golf-door-perimeter-seal-5-door-171837911h-3701-p.asp looking at it the higher spec ones have an extra strip at the top of the door up to August 82 171837913E left side, 171837914E right side. after that part number 171837913F which is for either side and shortened as required for a 4/5 door. https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk1-golf-upper-door-lip-seal-3-door-171837913f-3734-p.asp
I have seen mention of the seal you have being used on a mk1 though, I guess it could work? on a mk2 the new seals aren't shaped or anything you just squidge it into the corners and with age it shapes itself
Thank you for that I take it that the āUā shaped spring part clips on to the door top and the black edge would be just Visible when the door is closed
For the MK2 type the seal above the U bit clips to the lip around the inside of the door hole on the body, then the door seals up to the bit on the side. Its the only way I think it would work on a mk1 as well?
Great, Thank you once again. Have spotted a picture of the Mk2 seal on the internet. The door seal that I have does to the body of the car rather than fitting on the door. Can get it sorted now Cheers
