    Hello folks,

for the purist mainly, but perhaps also those interested in matching numbers of major components.

What codes/numbers/labels are available on the GTI mk1 to verify originality of the main components meant as chassis, engine and transmission?

I was wondering you would look for:

    1) chassis number (engine bay near the windscreen on the left side) - expected to be dated after the other components -
    2) cast numbers on the engine block (left and right side of the block) - likely to be the 'youngest' component -
    3) is the engine assembly date available somewhere? - likely to be dated after the cast number date -
    4) transmission codes are available somewhere?
..) any other code/number can be useful?

    Thanks

yep both engine and gearbox numbers can be checked to see the build date, no easy way to check if either is original to the car though. the V5 number could be looked at but thats easily changed, VW UK might be able to check for you or possibly the local dealer. but even a birth certificate request doesn't show either code though is still nice to have:

pop the engine and gearbox codes up and we can look them up anyway :)
