mk2 1.3 ryder

    can any1 help me, my mate has a 1.3 92 reg golf ryder and wants to get a little more poke out of it, short of nitrous, swapping engines or fi, is there anything that can be done for it, bolt on filter is coming soon, so any idas would be gr8, cheers.

    dont bother, every spent on a 1.3 is further away from a decent engine

    Got a 1.3 myself. They're fun little engines, whilst you're waiting to insure a better motor.

    I'd say do a decent service, get yerself a new oil air and fuel filter, new set of plugs, change the oil (before installing new filter ;) ). If this hasn't been done in a while, you'll see noticeable gains. I know my car gained a few hp back towards normal when this was done.

    Other than that, the 1300 motor is the same as the polo 1300, hence the different floorpan in 1300 golf engine bays to all other golfs (golves?). Polo GT cam fits i'm told - will liberate a few ponies, at the expense of fuel economy.

    You can use the weber carb from a 1.4 escort if u get an adaptor plate from weber, gt cam n cold air feed will all help

    dont get a bolt on filter they sook too much hot air which will slow you down and youll have no end of cold running probs in the winter months. just fit a weber carb there bout 200 new or you can sometimes get one 2nd hand. make a cold air feed to draw in cold air then sort the suspension so you dont need to scrub so much speed in the twisties then bide your time till you can affoard to buy a gti. richey.

    I agree on all of those points except the differences in the shells, the 1.3 shell is the same as the 1.8 16v shell, the mounts to the subframe are different but they bolt on. Mk1 golfs were slightly differnt but nothing a quick job with a welder wont sort.
    You can swap the engine for a polo GT one but you'll need the fuel injection to match or fit webers. You could port the head, fit a lumpy cam too but in the long run its so much money for little improvement. Considering a mk2 gti is dirt cheap, you can swap all the good bits over.
    I love driving the 1.3, it's great fun the cane around in and makes me smile almost as much as the 2.0 gti. Top cars.

    (in blatent disregard for what I have said above I am porting a 1.3 head just to see if it makes any difference)

    Just strip it, easiest and cheapest way to have just a little bit more oomph, lol.

    What about a 1.6 mk2 Ryder then? I mean the car only cost me 250 quid (but it's no dog - just happened to buy off a mate who originally bought off another mate). Don't expect it to be a GTi or need it to be (just my daily runaround). Will a twin Weber manifold go onto the head? :lol:

    I would leave the 1.3 alone and enjoy the fuel economy. These motors are solid and reliable, but were not made for performance.

    Keep it stock and save up for a GTI. You'll not be able to do much with it for sensible money.

    Oh well, worth asking tho. I don't a GTi - the insurance costs as much as my bmw 730!! My speed and power days are over after my scooby got written off... [:^(]

    It is a total pain the arse to get any extra gruntout of it without spending a bit of cash, unless you can do your own cylinder head mods.

    I'll be doing a trick head once i can afford the new guides, seats and the sort. Shall let you know how i get on with that one..
