mk2 golf gti 8v - best oil to use?

    Hello my name is chris and iam new to the vw scene i have a 1991 mk 2 golf gti 8v and im slowly getting her back in order i was wondering if anyone can tell me the best engine oil to use as the engine is at 158000 miles. cheers.

    i run 2 mk2 8v digi's and put rockoil 10/40 in them both, this was recommended to me by an engine builder, i change it every 6 months and it has always stayed clean(could have probably reused it!).

    i put 20w-40 semi synth in mine and its a dream!

    20W !!! - Thats a bit thick for an engine with Hydro tappets, I'd use a 15W and only if it's noisey....

    The Synta 10W40 that VW sell is fine, if you find there is a bit of noise and it uses more than 1/2 a litre every 3k miles then try a 15W40

    I use 10W40 if its rebuilt/decent condition and 15W40 if it's a bit rougher to help it along
