    Hi

    I'm looking to have the rear end of my MK2 painted as there are some signs of rust.

    its coming through a bit in the seams I went over the pic (not mine) in purple to show the areas I want to clean up, treat and paint.

    Can anyone tell me if the highlighted areas seam sealed from the factory?

    Pic below of mine to show some of what I'm dealing with

    Ive come up with the following plan;

    Take the seams back to bare metal using abrasives
    Treat with Bilt Hamber Deox
    Apply thin layer of Bilt Hamber Electrox zinc primer
    Mask either sides seams and apply thin bead of seam sealer (any brand recommendations?)
    Primer
    Base coat
    Clear coat

    If anyones got any advice or experience id be grateful for any pointers

    thats great many thanks, am I right in thinking that the section under the back lights (highlighted in pics 1&2) is seam sealed as well?

    Ive not used epoxy primer before is it generally designed to be used on bare metal and can you you apply base coat directly to it?

    I'm repainting the whole back end of the car (excluding tailgate) so was planning on flatting the sound paintwork down prior and painting on top. I've found a product called Spectral Under 395 which looks ideal (white in colour) the data sheet states it should be ok just double checking

    Thanks again,

    I really rate Spray Max I’ve used their 2K clear a number of times and it’s always given a really good durable finish for an aerosol,(planning to use it on this) I did use their high build primer on a previous job (non epoxy) and it was great but I think I may have applied it incorrectly as the surface was left with tiny imperfections (a bit like tiny pin holes) all over

    That's more than likely surface contamination of silicone or grease I would say
