That is a nice bit of steel.
Is it heavier than a stock crossmember?

not trying to pee over your bonfire but those welds on the collector manifold are awful. You should check your settings on your tig machine, either youre welding too hot or your shielding gas is escaping. What filler wire you're using ?

It’s not a bad effort but these types of tubular manifolds are notorious and crack at the collector end ! Make a strong support for the turbo as it looks heavy and allow for expansion as it’s a large engine and it will make some heat running on full chat. When you weld the manifold runners take them both one by one and purge them with argon gas…if you welding hot then move a bit quicker…make sure you’re not using disposable gas bottles and you keep the flow rate high if you’re welding outside ! Get a decent size bottle of argon from the likes of Adam Gas, Barnet welding supplies or BOC if you like to pay subscription! As I said, I weld all sorts of stuff all day long, it’s just constructive criticism! Practice makes perfect ! If you look at the above manifold it warped over 1cm at the flange and that was on a lousy 1.9 pd tdi ! It pulled the studs out of the cyl head ! Since fixing it it’s going ok, no more leaks ! Keep up the good work mate !

Excellent work Vinnie, not seen the thread till now. Wow. I am very tempted to learn to paint - got the gear, researching a lot at the mo. Need to do the roof and bonnet on mk3. Managed to do a nice blend with aerosols on the 3/4 to give me confidence.

Why have all of vinnies comments turned to shocked faces?

You know what they say, a grinder and paint makes you the welder you ain’t! Which is fine for me!

I’d like a TIG as i need to repair my manifold as it broke pre my ownership but I’ll just mig it, can’t imagine I’ll keep it long anyways

There are really good deals out there now if you think of getting a tig, jas8ic, Paton and r-tech are the entry level good quality welders at under a grand, you can get DC only machines for 1/2 that amount ! If you’re feeling flash then Kemppi, GYS, esab and EWM all do decent welders but price doubles…I used to weld with a thermal arc ta202 AC/DC, now it’s only marketed and sold as esab- brilliant piece of kit (parweld is built on same circuitry but less features)…2nd hand market is also flooded with ex demo/shop soiled/refurbished welders from r-tech, they use a timeless design on their Analog welders( one of my mates is using 2 and he is a professional welding outfit and they don’t get turned off during the day) and the digital ones are even better ! For some jobs mig is a lot better, especially if it goes to low amps as well for thin gauge/rusty metal !
