Hi all, I’m in the middle of removing the cylinder head on my Gti to change the blown gasket. In the Haynes it says to remove the camshaft first, is this necessary? Or can I do it in the bench later if needed? Can’t find a definitive answer on here so thought I’d ask.

    TIA

Don't see why, unless you're pulling out the valves to do stem seals, seats etc.
The cam doesn't cover the studs.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too! Just going to leave it. If it needs to come off, I’ll do it on the bench. Job for the morning

    cheers

I removed my 8v head without removing the camshaft and it’s been fine ever since. Have you got a Bentley manual to see what it says in there? If not, I’ll have a look tomorrow and let you know what it advises.

Haynes sometimes errs on the side of caution with, weight people are lifting etc etc.
