Well, I have decided to try and minimise the affects of E10 in the vehicles I have 'lying around' . These
are mostly tuned cars and bikes used for sport.

So far, so good. An exercise of draining systems ethanol on carb fitting.jpg

Get to the mk2 Golf Rally car and find the lift pump is u/s again.

Its had two already, in the 3 years since I built it.

Would love to run without it, but I need it to fill the under bonnet swirl pot, before being pumped onward at LP to the Webers.

So, my question to you guys (experts) is where to buy a mk2 gti lift pump that wont fail after 2 hors running and 3 months standing?

Also, I kind of expected some corrosion internally, but take a look at the piccy, this E5/E10 stuff is horrendous

    Thanks
    Jon

The boating people have been using fuel stabiliser for years, I wonder would that help?

    Thanks Tristan.
The scope of the issue is only evident to me now, having stripped a pair of DCOE's.
    In summary;
    Banjo's into carb, corrosion,
Inlet filters, 1/2 blocked with 'white stuff'
Float bowls, looked clean, had 1/2 egg cup full of water in, when tipped upside down
    Obvious corrosion on closer inspection
    Pump jets, crap in
    Main venturi, Aux, OK
Main float chamber, looked ok, but flooded with water and associated crap.
Hidden, so more scary when tipped upside down
Car ran 'ok', but obviously at major risk of running like a pig, very soon.
    Solution, no E anything
    Whatever it takes, avoid ethanol
    Jon

Race fuel, avoided the stuff for years, I'm too tight.
And 'pump fuel' specified, so that's what i've used.
Now? Esso Synergy 99 is apparently as near zero as available. But that's only tinternet hearsay.
I'm thinking some sort of dual fuel system so I can run the blighters round my gaff
    and onto trailers etc

I'm sure you could source some kind of aftermarket inline fuel pump which is E safe you can mod to mount to the lifter assembly? its literally held on with 2 rubber bands and the fuel hose from the factory so anything you can think of will be equivalent

I fitted an old Mitsubishi GTO fuel pump in my Mk2 lift pump hanger.

So a Walbro 255 or similar should fit with a bit of fiddling.

My be a bit overkill though for a lift pump!.

I bough some Aspen 4 for the GTO, £80 for 25 litres but pure Alkylate so 3+ year life and if it does evaporate it leaves no residue.. Will be doing the Golf tomorrow as they don't move much..

I work on knackered fuel systems just about daily at work so £80 well spent to not deal with them at home..

    So, here we are again.
    Same car, same problem.
Hasnt moved since I flushed and rebuilt the carbs, drained the tank etc.
Some great piccies though to illustrate the problem...

    So in summary;
Car wouldn't start, except on easy start.
So carbs syringed out, first piccy, 15% fuel, rest ???
Next 2 half litres, pumped from tank 100% who knows what?? (no wonder it wouldn't run)
Next 1/2 litre, a little fuel
    Next gallon, 60% fuel
Question, where does 3 litres of crap come from when the tank only had 1.5 gallons of fresh Esso Supreme 99+ added
    when it was parked up.????
I have 'no clue'. Surely condensation cannot be that bad? Is something growing in the tank? Have I bought a bad batch of fuel?
    LOL
    Jon
    Guys: help me out here
Just bought some Aspen 4 for winter use..
Can runs dead head, no return to tank..

I know, its the white liquid that is the problem though... Bought some Aspen 4 yesterday, maybe
I'm going to be forced down that route.
Also thinking that buying expensive V Power/99 stuff is a bit 'pot luck' as if its not shifting quickly enough at the garage
goodness knows what's happening in those underground tanks....

May have a leak somewhere allowing water into the tank. Is your rubber seal on the fuel cap ok?

What is the Aspen4 used for? Is it a fuel additive or used to replace the fuel over a storage period? This E10 is a real concern.

Its a manufactured petrol replacement. Shelf life > 2 years, no residue if it evaporates. As far as I gather
main target audience is garden machinery.
£22 a gallon, so not a cheap option
    Mixable

Got it, so ideal if leaving any petrol fuelled engine for long periods without the worry of water contamination?

It's Alkylate petrol, basically pure with no residue left when evaporated.

I use it for cars and bikes in storage.

My job involves sorting the mess out that normal pump fuel causes when stood so for the price of the Apen 4 it's a bargain imho.
