Hanmered out a couple late nights this weekend, wanting it painted asap! fully gutted the interior after work friday and saturday cleaned up and rubbed down the floorpans, roll cage etc as they were starting to surface rust quite badly, all keyed up and liberally coated in epoxy primer, keyed up the surface again and fired on a good coating of gravitex stonechip to the floors, I'm not running any carpets so this should help it survive a bit longer hopefully. Ripping the engine and box back out tonight then engine bay can get prepped and painted at same time as interior. 350 quid of paint supplies on route, full steam ahead now! cage cleaned up epoxy primed floorpans cleaned up, sanded down and painted in epoxy primer floors keyed up again and nailed in gravitex stonechip, will key up the rest of the interior now and then basecoat can go on, interior is going to be a c*nt to paint!
Don't you want to weld those cross-fillers in the doorsides of the cage? I noticed the crosses are not exactly mirrored (sorry for noticing ), they do make it more sturdy.
Got you now, I did consider this before but I don't think its necessary to be honest! Where are the crosses not mirrored?
Hey, Love your work I found your build when searching online for the same engine and gearbox solution you have. I am building a caterham 7 car with the 20VT and RX8. Question I have for you, what bush and bush tubes did you use for engine mounts? any detailed pictures/footage? links to the parts? I also have a 20vt in a mk1...great motors! Cheers
Hello, thanks! the bushes and bush sleeves are mk2 escort world cup crossmember items, think I got them from motorsport tools if I remember correctly! Caterham 7 with a 20vT should make for an interesting ride - nice!!
In the doors: http://www.eastsidevw.co.uk/board/u...04.jpeg.8bd3391f330578e8665997bb960098ba.jpeg At least, I don't think it's an optical illusion right?
Engine bay completely stripped, front suspension and subframe off and jacked her right up to get in aboot sanded right back with 320, epoxy primed again, flatted back with red scotch pad and touched up a few more areas with epoxy now masked up ready for more gravitex stonechipping tonight to the lower section of the bay and the inner wings and front valance hopefully lay down some actual paint imorn!
Got the bay stonechipped and painted last weekend, quite happy with the finish, looks a bit greyer in the pics due to the lighting in my garage but its a nice glossy white under daylight got the engine and box split too so I can tart up the engine a bit, need to make a turbo support and modify the adapter plate to make the starter a bit easier to remove Hoping to paint the interior next but need to suss out the sunroof ‘delete’ first. Hoping to not have to weld anything for warpage or have too much filler on the go for cracking as the roof will likely flex a lot. hoping to bond in this mk2 golf sunroof panel with some tabs underneath to support it a bit more, should look like an OEM sunroof once done… hopefully!
Yep its a nice cheap AGU 20vT engine, completely standard internals for now, TFSI ko4-064 turbo, 550cc injectors, rx8 5 speed gearbox, CG motorsport ceramic paddle clutch, heres hoping it all works fine together!
Thank you. Interesting. So does it require an adapter plate from engine to gearbox? I’m assuming it will be mounted lengthways rather than it would be in its original car. I’m also assuming custom engine mounts etc?
Indeed, 10mm adapter plate, custom clutch setup, homemade chassis mounted subframe with custom engine mounts, scroll through the last few pages for more details
Sunroof panel tacked in, made a few little u shaped spacers to tack it in, used strong magnets to keep roof skin straight, slow and steady, blowing the airline between tacks to prevent any warpage, came out ok! will fill this gap with tiger seal once the car is painted to make it look like an oem sunroof seal. Also got the interior painted last weekend, total c**t to do, rollcages are a nightmare to paint! back down rolling again starting to bolt a few little things up Currently stripping the engine down ready to refit. Made a turbo brace to support the snail, and also welded a nut onto the adapter plate so I dont need to take the gearbox off to change the starter! will build the car back up to an extent, then mask her up for the final round of paint getting there, I can see the light now!
