    Yeah that's what I thought so when you posted I went back and double checked & here's where it gets confusing...

    Workshop Manual->
    Engine, Mechanics ->
    4-cyl. injection engine (4-valve), mechanics->
    17 Lubrication->
    Removing and installing parts of the lubrication system->
    Item 24 on diagram v17-0533 - Oil Drain Plug 40NM! FAIR ENOUGH!

    But if you look under the Maintenance Manual:
    Engine Oil: Drain or extract and top up; Renew Oil Filter:

    Torque settings for oil drain plug:
    Note
    Remember that the following torque details must not be exceeded. Excessive torque can cause leaks in the area of the oil drain plug or even damage.
    t Engine code ABF: Sheet metal sump 40 Nm
    t 4-cyl. engines: Sheet metal sump 30 Nm, aluminium sump 20 Nm
    t 6-cyl. engines 30 Nm

    Well done VW! From experience I think 40NM is a bit tight as I always struggle to get the sump plug off and I always fear that it's seized but hey I'm getting old and feeble. :lol:

    20NM did not feel safe - I went to 35NM this time so hopefully I wont drop my oil and 5000 miles from now I'll fight again to get the damn plug out

    hmmm, my post disappeared. Nevermind, reviving an old thread as I have a mk3 gti 8v and am replacing the crank sensor this week (its on order) today I was going to remove the old one but found a nice rusty rounded allen bolt holding the sensor in place.
    Any ideas how I can remove this with limited tools and a very tight working space (dont want to have to remove the whole front panel)
    TIA for any help
