run a big power cable to the boot 4 gauge or similar is best to prevent voltage drop. then get two earth distribution boards one to cater for the underbonnet power wires one for the under bonnet earth wires. connect the power cable to the power distro. connect the battery earth to a suitable earthing point in the boot (preferably make a new one) thats about it. make sure the power cable yourun has good insulation as it will not be fused (due to the fuse blowing when you start is). obviously make sure the battery is very secure in the boot and if its not sealed you'll need a battery box such as the ones from demon tweeks. transit battery trays are easy to mount in most places or chop the oe one out.
Get some 500A welding cable from a welding equipment supplier. You need as little voltage drop as possible and this stuff is the best. It's also very flexible and has good insulation. You'll need some big crimps on the ends, but the supplier should be able to sort you out. If not, most trade electrical places or contractors will have the big crimp tool to do it. If you look at most modern cars, particularly Peugeot, they have a battery connection block with large fuses next to the battery on the inner wing.
Mk1's dont use a tray as such so you couldn't just move it about........i used an ford escort tray myself.
Nwnlarge, Could you please say that again in language I can understand Yeha, Could you please go over your last sentence again? What are you recommending here? Thanks
run a big power cable (this is a power cable similar to those used in car audio installations such as a 4 gauge cable this is approximately 10mm in diameter most car audio specialists stock them)to the boot 4 gauge or similar is best to prevent voltage drop (voltage drop means that it will be harder for the car to start). then get two earth distribution boards (earth Distribution boards are usually solid blocks of gold coated metal with one large input ie: the above mentioned 4 gauge power cable and 4 out puts for smaller cables usually 8 gauge cables) one to cater for the underbonnet power wires (where the underbonnet power cables normally attach to the positive terminal on the battery you now put them into the distribution board attached to the big power cable you will be running to the boot where the battery is to be kept, usually all under bonnet powercables will fit very comfortably into an 8 gauge hole)one for the under bonnet earth wires (under the bonnet there are usually 3-4 earth cables connected to the negative terminal of the battery you can connect all of these to the distribution board you are using for the earth/negative side, there will be one space free i would imagine) connect the power cable to the power distribution board and then run the cable through to the boot. connect the battery earth to a suitable earthing point in the boot (preferably make a new one (this will mean drilling a hole in the boot and sanding the area around the hole to ensure a good connection, it is advised to cover the bare metal in vaseline to prevent rust, most in car entertainment stores sell suitable "earth foot's" ask they will know what you mean)) make sure the power cable yourun has good insulation as it will not be fused (due to the fuse blowing when you start it). (the reason for thick insulation is to prevent the cable being cut or nicked on any body fixings which could lead to a short in the circuit or a fire) obviously make sure the battery is very secure in the boot and if its not sealed (some batteries contain a gel like substance and are not accesable without breaking the casing and othersare filled with acid the acid ones are theones to make sure are in a box)you'll need a battery box such as the ones from demon tweeks.(if you type battery box into demon tweeks or www.raldes.com both will come up with suitable boxes just measure the battery and any fixing method you are using and order one up) transit (popular van amongst the british) battery trays ( trays popular amongst nova drivers for psuedo donuts)are easy to mount in most places or chop the oe (original equipment)one out. anything i missed ? ps. its NWM large
Go down your local scrappy and look for BMWs with the boot mounted battery and grab the cables off one of these, they also have a remote +ve terminal in the engine bay (used for jump-starting) which can be used for the engine bay +ve feeds for alt started etc. I was originally going to boot mount my battery in a mk5 polo TDI battery box as I was fitting a volvo 740 intercooler and the battery was in the way, but due to the volvo ICs being unable to take the levels of boost I was going to be using I abandoned the idea and instead fitted the battery/fusebox in the normal location vnd uprated the cars wiring using the BMW remote +ve terminal to starter motor cable from the battery toi the starter motor and uprated the rest of the battery, alternator and ammeter wiring with 16mm cables
when i relocated my battery to the boot i used the power cable from a 97' BMW 7 series with a remote +ve too.
Out of interest what does this remote +ve from a BMW look like, so that I'll know what to look for at a scrappy
well it's bolted down but it's not in it's perminent place as the rear panel is coming off in the new year so going to have a sortout then.
Hi, When you connect the 3earth wires into the distribution board, do you not then need to earth that?
