The tube is the same for all MK2, so unless you have a MK1 engine block or as you say the tube was swapped for an early one then you should have the correct tube for the upper plastic guide. If its properly shaped to accept the guide then its got to be correct? are you sure you have fully clipped the guide in place? the new ones can be pretty stiff and need a good shove and twist to lock all the way down.

My engine I beleive is an 86 or 87 EV.as I saw a date stamp on something when
Disassembly took place.the later flat blade dipstick dosnt feel right in the tube
Neither.(feels like really tight and grating).the one that came with the engine
Origonally is the round type that slides in easily.
Gonna take some pics I a bit and re-post to see what's going on.thanks.

image.jpeg Oil level ten minutes after a short drive car is on level ground.
Engine has near on 4 litres of oil in.dont know where it all is but expected max
    On the dipstick.
Did manage to push dipstick funnel on a bit more and now I'm 100% sure it's fully
On.is it possible that I've got a lot sitting around the engine oil ways etc etc.
This was a full strip down/ rebuild so there might be areas that have filled up
And not returned all to sump.????

This I've just spotted online interesting difference on the two e.v engine oil capacity.
Doubt mine is the 3.5/0.5 must be 4.0/0.5
Dipstick and funnel must be right after all.

:thumbup:Thanks all is good with rebuild runs very well and sounds fairly quiet
Which is good.tappets took a few minutes to quieten down.just ran it at
A fast variable idle for 5 minutes, varying from 2000rpm to 3500rpm.
But never at one speed for too long.just one or two things to sort
Before proper road test.i think my cambelt could be a bit tight
It(wurrrrs)a bit when revved.and strangely my throttle cable has
Come out/off the pedal but I can't see what's missing but it's been
Botched with just a thin cable tie and I've drove on it for 2 summers.
So was lucky I found it now,
Throttle cable is there with the bent end but looks like there should
Be something round in the pedal( rubber bung&clip)or something.

Hi, as you possibly know I've swapped a 1600 e.g engine for a 1800 EV engine
My question is when I had the 1600 in (I set timing I set at TDC.)
Do I set the 1800 the same as the dizzys the same one from the 1600.
    Thanks.

for the throttle pedal it needs a rubber grommet, GSF or VW will sell you one dirt cheap. make sure the pedal isnt bent, the cable should be pulled nice and straight thru the bulkhead hole. If its set too tight it will bend the pedal arm, easy to straighten out though. once sorted set the cable so that when pedal is flat to the floor the throttle is only just wide open.

ignition timing wise the basic setting will be as per 1.6 GTI if you use the 1.6 GTI dizzy, but as we all know the basic setting can be ignored and more advance dialled in ;)

Ok thanks rubjonny.dont seem to have a thanks icon anymore.

Another small problem I have is since owning this car 3 years almost.
My speedo works fine but has never clocked up miles.some people might like
This idea but I don't I'd rather know what I'm clocking up.i have no idea where to
Even begin to sort this or if it's even a fix at all.ive had clocks out in the past for
Bulb replacement so if I have to change then no big deal really.but rather sort the ones I've got.

    Ok thanks.
Just another question excuse me for sounding a bit stupid.but since this engine rebuild
My temp gauge is 3/4 nearly all the time.ive been trying to understand why and my
First thoughts were (new parts more friction=more heat).
Coolant is all there no leaks, new rad,new thermostat, new head gasket,
Water pump is pumping as I can see bottle being topped up by thinnest hose.
But one thing I've noticed when my fan kicks in the hot air is blowing out of
The grill from the engine bay and it's been like this since I've owned the car
The previous engine ran at 3/4 a lot also(maybe a bit less)the fan has always
Blown this way since ownership.ive read a few comments here and there and
Some say it don't matter which way.but surely it's wrong it should be pulling cooler
Air in not blasting ( hot engine bay air )[8-}]onto a hot rad and ejecting out the grill.

as you say its not right no, it should be pulling air thru the radiator into the engien bay so the same direction air flows when the car is driving forwards. my old 1.6 was the same, it turned out that someone in the past had forced the fan plug on the wrong way round.

    Bit cooler.
