So following on from a previous thread where i discovered my radio had been badly fitted, leading to the radio illumination wire shorting against the bottom of the radio casing. After sorting this, a few weeks later i got into the car to find all of the dash illuminated. i tried to switch on the lights and the switch didn't work. once i pulled out the switch i discovered that the loom was fried, primarily the dash illumination wire (which happens to be coded with the same colour as the radio illumination). i'm assuming as these wires are connected at a terminal, that the original radio fry also followed this wire and caused the new issue.

I removed all burnt wires, and amazingly found a loom on ebay which looked identical. I fitted it all only to discover my light switch is keyed differently... My original loom has a red switch block with 86 written on it, and the new one is black with 87. The wiring is the same colours with the only difference being the lack of yellow wire for my DimDip (which i have sinced removed after learning it can also cause shorting).

So...after looking on ebay it seems impossible to find a switch that is keyed as per my new loom. Can i remove the key from my original switch and use that? It looks like the seller sent the loom from Spain, so that may explain the different keying (even though apart from that it looks like it is identical).

I really dont want to fry another switch loom, and need to use my lights!!! any suggestions?

The car is a 1991 Mark 2 golf 1.6 Driver

Here are pictures of the two looms and my switch:
