Finally made enough space at home to be able to take the engine etc out and get my old lady back on the road!.

Nice and easy weekend project and no need to rush to get it back together.

Looking forward to taking time to do it right!

Decided to go manual steering rack, are Meyle racks decent quality?.

Rack's arrived and doesn't look too bad!.

Had a lucky escape, bought two 500kg screw lifts, got car 2 foot off floor then BANG!, lift failed.

Looking at it they expected a soft 4mm roll pin to support half a ton, absoultey shocking!.

I was going to get stands under as well but lucky it failed as it would have been an accident waiting to happen..

For the safety of everyone else who might buy those lifts I think you should be reporting that failure to ~ trading standards??

Something rated to 500kg should be fit for purpose and be tested to at hold least 1.5 times the stated working load and designed with a factor of safety even greater than that.

Might be an idea with trading standards, they are dangerous in their factory state.

I had no choice but to rebuild them into a safe state to use, 12.9 bolts thoughout and drilled some 10mm holes for a decent bolt to hold them up if they did go again. Plus axle stands and wheels under car as well..

Got plenty done this afternoon, another hour or so's work and engine/ subframe will be out!.

    20180715_152447.jpg 20180715_173742.jpg

Managed to separate the seized aluminium hubcentric spacers and brake disks with brute force and ignorance!.

    20180715_193108.jpg 20180715_200110.jpg

Can I drift the hub out of the bearing with a suitable drift or is it a press out job at work?. To be fair I need to press bearings out anyway..

Need a new G60 timing belt, maybe go for a wide belt conversion?.

    20180715_191027.jpg

I'm powder coating the Neuspeed ARB's but not sure what to do with the rose joints, might look into chemical rust removal?.

Onwards and upwards as they say...

I would return these to the seller, not really suitable for your job besides, bet they are made in China like the collection of floor jacks I have that have failed usually just out of warranty.
Buy a good low profile trolley jack and some axle stands, don't what to see anyone get hurt here ok,cheers.

It's the 1.8KR 16v with BBM front mount alternator G60 kit, Scirroco inlet manifold, BBM fuel rail. 16vG60.

Can't remember where the bigger front brakes came from, they were 5 stud originally, possibly Passat or VR6 Golf?. Pagid fast road pads.

It was a work in progress so will be taking my time to neaten it all up, may go back to stock fuel pressure regulator as well.

Re-wire is also on the cards but debating wether to get it through its MOT first!.

I have a Clarke Racing Aluminium low profile Jack and 4 stands.

The irony was I bought these jacks to make lifting it safer!. After spending 3 hours on them yesterday they are safe now just shocking how they came out of the factory.

Going to invest in some threaded screw type axle stands as well.

I don't like getting under a car on axle stands as I always think it's possible to topple over, but use them as secondary support (along with wheels under sills).

Have sent the seller a message so see what they say, have left a review as Dangerous with pictures and will look into Trading Standards as well.

Just been in touch with Ebay Safety team, sent a load of pictures in the hope they will take them off ebay at least.

Seller had offered 10% refund!, sent a message back it was about safety rather than money...

Juust ordered 8 cans of this for wishbones, subframe etc. Its zinc based for corrosion protection.

See how it looks but may put a Wurth gloss finish coat over the top?.

I'd buy new ones - the bearing surface looks rusted so won't be long before they start knocking. Simply bearings or similar should have something the right size id guess.
