Hi All, Another question regarding rear beams is the length of the actual "trailing beam". In other words, does installing a Mk. 3 beam on a Mk. 2 increase the wheelbase? I am having difficulty finding that out as well. Thanks. Carl
Thanks Ryan. Post 1 all updated now folks, but more and more data needed. If you've got a stripped beam, with no stub axles on, and a measuring tape, please do the measuring, ta!
im being slated on Edition 38 - http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=194297&st=0&gopid=1671709&#entry1671709
That's cracking info. What software file is it off, as there must be loads to be had if they're quoting the dimensions we we're after all along
Thats off ELSAWin, unfortunatly thats all I can get you. Had a look in the MK1 and MK2 sections but there pretty bare. That info was only there since there was a change in the 4 stud axles It does however have an overview of all the different coil springs and what they're fitted to, plus the MK2 & MK3 section has some interesting info on rear beam material thickness... I'll ask my mate though he had some software that some handy info, but it might have been purely parts based rather than dimentions!
1996/7 Seat toledo 4 stud with drums is 1345mm for me!! Tell me if i'm measuring it from the right place's? (its hard to photo on your own though as it look's like 1344ish in pic) Also just measured a mk3 Seat ibiza cupra 4 stud (20vt & should be the same as polo) and it was 1325mm
Any updates on this? Whats the widest rear beam that will bolt onto a Mk2 golf? How much does it affect the shock lower mounting points?
I updated post one a couple of weeks back. Widest seems to be non-GTI models, so watch the lack of ARBs. It seems the shocker position isn't adjusted. The welded frame which has the backplate and the shocker mount is the bit that differs and is just narrower/wider on the wheel side.
Thanks Chris, I'm having clearance issues with my new exhaust and anti rollbar drop link, thought a wider rear beam might give me a bit more clearance.
To update my other thread,i got hold of an "L" reg mk3 golf CL rear axle after looking at it in the yard,it was quite clear to me that it was wider than the toledo or a mk2 golf,so out with the tools flip it up side down and remove asap This one is now a keeper & will be sent off to the blasters plus a powder coat to boot Here's the pics, you can see how much wider it is compare to the previous axle, when the two are together. Measurement was not easy but its probs about the 1376mm so the widest available (see pics) Its also worth saying that because its a none GTI axle i was "SHOCKED" by the amount of movement in whats a heavy item and under such load especially in a track car like i will use it for. An ARB will be used with this without doulbt to begin with but i now see why a few go to more lengths in tightening the rear up.
Measurement points? Hi Having bent my rear beam at curborough( t ( enough to see the negative camber by eye) I need a new beam and want to check the new is straight What is the correct measurement points for above dimensions is it outsiede face to outside face mid point? or should You take two measurement at top and bottom of the plate to reflect any built in negative camber? Cheers Chris
Getting warmer thanks any idea how much diff top from bottom I should be looking for? Just want to check its ok before splashing the readys and doing the fandango to fit it No point in fitting another bent one! Cheers Chris
All you can do is use the base camber settings from the factory, assume that sits directly vertical on the backplate, and use trigonometry to work out the difference from top to bottom.
For a slight update & i think its worth saying. Not ALL early mk3 are mk2 items! the reason i'm saying this is because i bought mk2 poly bushes for the 1994 non-gti axle and.......they didn't fit The centre hole is MUCH larger on the mk3 item & only Powerflex do them (about 55.00 delivered) so more expensive. I will update this thread at the weekend with pics and mm X mm of BOTH types of bushes to save others buying 2 sets of polys like i did
interesting as my picture from elasa shows the early MK3 beams were wider than MK2, until they were phased out around 93. it also mentions this was a 'gradual' changeover, so no hard dates can be supplied. So are the wider beams using MK2 or MK3 bushes? Did the later MK3s switch back to MK2 beams?
Here's the pics.... obviously mk2 is in yellow and mk3 purple If its helpfull the hole diameters are approx 45mm for the mk2 & 57mm for the mk3 the part number for mk3 powerflex item (i think there are 2 types)
