Just wondering what is the general rule for placement of the seal in the holder, should it fit flush or recessed a few millimetres like I found the old (leaky) one ?.
Fitted a new seal but have now found it isn't a direction type and is a different thickness and some no brand POS,just don't want to risk a leak once the ABF is in the car,TIA cheers.

Personally I put them flush, unless stated otherwise in the manual

Thanks makes sense to me,some monkey had damaged the carrier dowels which I have fixed but the old seal has ran non-concentric to the crank so I have a issue there but if I fit flush I will be away from that wear area so a good result.
    Thanks for the reply .

also to add you can move it a little further in if you find the crank has a groove worn into it

I’ve got a new genuine VW seal in the holder. I can send you a picture of how they installed it in the factory if you wish?

Thanks rustbuster, just add the pic to your next reply that would be great, when I removed the original leaky seal I measured and found I some leeway from the wear groove in the crank by fitting it flush with the holder,as John mentioned I can always go in further.
New seal arrives soon so with remove holder today, cheers.

Photos aren’t brilliant so took some measurements too. Also, part number on the box just to make sure we’re right there.

So this is the engine side which is almost flush with the recess it’s adjacent to, if anything a fraction of a mm proud. And measured from the machined face to the lip of the seal, hopefully can see where the micrometer is resting on the photos is 2.54mm.

Flipped over, clutch facing side, from metal lip to groove in the rubber seal where you can see part number is 1.23mm

Should get you close enough. Cheers.
