    Hi,
Got an intermittent problem with the offside rear light cluster on my Mk1
The indicator in particular stops working.
The fault is corrected so soon as I wriggle the wires in the white plug
that connects to the bulb holder.

Thinking about chopping the plug and fitting individual insulated spade
    connectors.
Is this likely to cause and collateral problems.

    Thanks

before you cut anything, pull the plug off and open the flap on the back, withdraw the pin(s). check the pin condition, if dirty buff them up. if loose, see if you can bend back into shape.

The plug itself is the same as MK2 golf except the mk2 ones are black if that's any help, though usually the plug is fine just the terminals need looking at.

The terminals used are standard or power timer, you can get from polevolt, ebay, farnell etc. On Polevolt, Ref: 3-8441/10:
    https://polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Terminals_for_Special_Applications.html

or more modern standard timer type, Ref: 3-2030:
