What are the advantages and disadvantages of fully seam welding the body on a car?

    Cheers

not to mention the fatigue cracking the shell will experience due to the increased loading due to the reduction in flexing

I would think ride quality would increase. Instead of the chassis flexing the shocks are allowed to work off a more solid platform which is better for handling also.

You dont hear of manufacturers touting a flexible chassis for comfort its always the contrary.

No point seam welding without a putting in a rollcage.
If you have the two then there is no reason why you should be cracking up.

Allows the steering and suspension to do what it is designed to do.

    Thats what I thought.

Would it be possible to use a soft suspension setting if you were to have it fully seam welded but with no roll cage? Would that kind of ease things slightly?

Where would cracking occur in the worse cases, around the strut towers?

Is there such a thing as semi-seam welding [:s] :p where you could do some seams and not others? Or is it a all or none at all affair?

Has anyone got any pictures of what a fully seam welded 'shell looks like [:$]

    Thanks :)

You could put extra spot welds inbetween the ones allready there, this would be a semi seam weld, sortoff!

Have a ride in a welded shell car first - it's a bad thing, for a road car.
