So...I was planning to install new dynamat type sound dreadening in my mk2 but someone has installed sound deadening tar like panels all over the boot, struts, roof and back seats. The advice on the internet says to remove all old sound deadening before laying new, my question is why? Would adding another layer not be better?

    Any thoughts?

If it's good stuff I'd leave it .
But stuff that sticks on, that has the bitumen type base has to stick to the metal . Typically you have 3 types of insulation.
Bitumen type pads, stuck to the tinwork , they absorb the ding and drumming of vibration.
Then on top, closed cell foam and multi layer vinyl. Those 2 actually "block" the noise from reaching your ears. They're more in the style of felt underlay.
