My car I suspect has a broken valve spring although I do not know until I get the rocker cover off.

Are there any symptoms of broke valve spring on the 16V ?

My car seems to be down on power at the top end.

Bill from my memory had a similar problem after doing Mallory I believe...

Taking it to TSR tomorrow for a check up.

Anyone else had a similar problem

Misfire, power loss, and a "tinkly" sort of rattle from the top end if you listen through the valve cover with a stethoscope......

I know Bill had a problem with valve springs on the Jetta, but I can't remember what symptoms he had, sorry.

I'd guess it would cause a misfire though.

My old Jetta did break a valve spring.. (exhaust one) after Mallory. It was'nt from just driving it tho, part pf my gear linkage popped off allowing the gear stick to go from top of 4th into 5th, but the g'box went into 3rd! SCREEEEEEEEEM. 10.5K revs mechaincal overrev.

engine continued to run on the day.. Did'nt really notice much difference.. Kept thinking maybe its not as crisp as it once was. Popped gear selector ball joint back together (tie wrapped it) and continued on the day.

Felt afterwards it had lost its zip and was'nt as keen to pull top end.

Did a donnington day a month or so later, where it spat out #1 plug core, melting lead etc.. Investigation and plug replacement showed #3 to have one earth prongs..were 3! - #1 and #3 had experienced problems. Overrev at Mallory was the cause.

I think (hope) you will find a busted spring which is straightforward to replace. My springs were Crane Race Valve springs (mucho stiff for when I ran the 300 cams once) but had to replace all of them for a matched set of OE ones. Was crisp and nice afterwards.

    Good luck Ian.
