How would you go about make 180-200bhp in a mk2 Golf....?

The car is currently a 1986 GTi with a 1.9 8v in there. Extra parts that might help include some CBR600RR TBs and MegaSquirt MS2 that I have lieing around.

Very very expensive from an 8v.
Not too bad from a 16v.
Cheap and relatively easy from a VR.

All depends on what you want though.

For 200bhp, your looking at getting an ABF in there and tinckering about with that.Full Miltek exhaust, fliter and setup will see you till about 170bhp.Then your talking ported n polished head for another 10-15bhp.Then you could add your TB's on top of that for a wee bit more.

As far as getting it in the 8v you have already, I don't know 8vs but at a guess I think you'll really struggle to get that sort of power from it.I'm guessing as its a 1.9 then its probbly got a lairy cam in it atm, already a 1.9, and I could be well wrong but I'd imagine your pusing about 140bhp just now with it?

Its got a 8v in there now - but I assumed it would need to be replaced with somthing like a 16v hence the forum choice ;) The current lump was fine at the 'Ring untill the uphill section - its probably got 130bhp at the mo - so another 50 or so would be perfect! Its not a road car as such - more of a trackday and 'Ring car.

Hadn't considered a vr6... arnt they heavy as hell and kill the handeling. Convince me guys! lol What are they like to fit?

VR6 = heavy lump in the front of an already understeering car......bad idea IMO

    (flight fight fight :) )

 cue GVK to prove his point....

180 is easy out of a KR valver and quite cheap, use a 2lt bottom end (9a or 6a) KR head with some PP work by man in the shed, use two exhaust cams (need to get the one for the inlet machined) get the WUR mod done and I recon you wont be far off 180, I prob can confirm this soon. Iv heard a set of 276/276 cams might get you near 200 with the above set up otherwise id go the TB + MS route.

oh yea i forgot about SS manifold and exhaust... Iv got 165bhp atm and all I got is a full SS sytem and a 2lt botttom end! with the exaust cam mod and the WUR mod id hope to gain 15bhp and with a PP head id expect better delivery and a few more bhp.

there's so much hot air banded around with power figs, regardless of what people say, IMO there are very few valvers out there that make over 180hp and those that make 200hp are very very rare indeed

181 from a 1900 with stock cams - what is the CR ?

my car is atomic powered according to stealth lol

take the whole bhp thing with a pinch of salt, a big pinch of salt. like a handful.

just line the cars up and have a bit of fun rather than obsessing over numbers

bhp isnt even a measurable quantity. its is a mathematical calculation which is estimated/guessed at by a RR. an RR's almost sole useful function is as a diagnosis tool

Can't remember if it's got a higher cr (was built about 6 years ago), used to run 260 cams but after a trip to stealth racing put standard ones back in and it made a bit more top end plus loads more mid range[:d]
Also tried split duration but vince fitted them, rr'd it then took them right out there and then.

Top end figures are all well and good but its really about what jim at star performance used to call white paper under the line

Vince hates aftermarket cams. Probably because he hasn't a clue how to set them up:lol:

My own valver pushed 209@Stealth, 200bhp@ TSR (all fly) and 168@wheels at my local rolling road who set it up.
Anyone who's been out in it will verify it went like sh it off a shovel.

I think paul haslems 20.ltr 16v was pushing out 179 at the flywheel and its plenty quick enough - well good enough to put my mk2 2.9 vr to shame anyway .

right, just to clarify mine was rr'd at stealth @ 181 bhp and at tsr @ 178 at the fly. Although had the head rebuild between.

If you think vince hates cams you should have seen his face when i asked about fitting dth throttle bodies:lol:
