I hear the alternative shell has gone in for a cage fitting today.

Should be done in a week - will try to grab some more pic soon.

So the cage will go in before I could get near it with the nibbler and spot weld drill, so it'll be like a climbing frame by the time I get onto it! Again!

If for any reason anyone should want a piece of the old shell cut off as a momento (can't think what, but open to ideas) feel free to give me a shout.

Ok, bit of a long overdue trip down to see the Mk1 today, and there's been some progress all right.

I've put a bit more info on the first post on the thread btw.

New cage is fitted - pretty much a copy of the old one near enough, with a few irrelevant differences. The guy who did it saw the old shell before he installed it. Low cross bar behind B-pillar has been included again:

    Engine bay is painted:

I have mentioned to the guys that a strengthening piece between the rack mounts would be well worth fitting (courtesy of R&D by IV mk1 16v)...

... though the old shell had no reported 'moving steering mount' problems.

Cage ties up to the front strut tops as before. These sections saved the old shell twice before in lesser prangs, and would have saved the old shell, had the decision not been made to re-shell it anyway.

New top mount plates have been 'fabbed - flat sheet of laser cut steel, to accept old top mount bearings. I thought the old ones would be cut off the car, but nope, the guys that are doing it are right on the ball and made them up.

    Rear turrents, seam welded:

Floor has been scraped bare of underseal, with a bit more to go on the bulkhead. Seat bracket cross members both removed:

The front inner wings have been stripped of underseal, using one of these wire brushes...

.... in an angle grinder-type air tool. It's actually a brush designed to fit in a drill, and a bit less vicious than a normal angle grinder wire brush. Seems to have done the job:

Entire underfloor has also been stripped of underseal, painted with two-pack, and a more superficial stone chip paint, since the car is often on the roads in winter, and the salt will deteriorate it rapidly without:

Intercooler actually survived quite well, and has now been repaired and is ready:

AW Tracksport arches sitting up on the shelf, waiting their turn, along with ?Smith & Deakin? new fibreglass bonnet:

(Std rear arches have yet to come off the car - will do in due course)

Plastics 4 Performance windows due to arrive, to give the appearance a proper freshen up.

    "It's getting there" [:D]

Found a little gem whilst in there:

Part no. on TSR-sourced PAS rack. Stamped 'TRW' for mfr... Part no. 34006112 RH. Time to explode the myth. See Mk1 PAS thread here

    Nearside rack mount:

    looking good.

Edit: the exhaust looks a bit messy mind, what's that box in it's way (battery?) as i thought it would have been better without all those bends to get it over to the other side?

Triangulated rear axle ;) & yes, battery box.

The exhaust has to go through the middle to avoid the axle..

...and the battery was situated there in the old shell after the exhaust was relocated, since the space is available.

Excellent progress made Chris. Hope the rest of the fab work and build goes to plan. Really looking forward to seeing the beast back terrorising some expensive machinery on the track.

Of course, but race prepping a mk1, when the car has beaten race prepped Porsche GTs on track isnt the same kind of money ;)
