I am thinking about spending some of my bonus this year on a cage for the mk2, the big issue seems to be the sun roof, I dont want to ditch it as the car is used for road use as well as fun weekends, so its nice to have a bit of fresh air wofting around... but like wise I want a cage that will stand up if the worse should happen...

I have seen some cages on ebay by Tornado Motorsport who are only up the road from me and do fitting (I dont weld [:$] ) and being bolt in it means should it need to come out at some point it can.

I am looking at a MSA+ spec kit

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK-2-golf-gti...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19b6e579da

but having only single door bars as I think double will be over kill for what I need, but still keeping the X in the rear stay with the harnesses bars and having the Lower brace in between the B pillars.

think this will be worth the cost? and more importantly does it look to be the right spec for MSA? just incase I go to a trackday etc where they are picky.

    Thanks

    Karl.

A friend on mine has bought a couple of these cages for the MK2 series and are spot on. Id keep the X bar in as is fairly low compare to some and offers easy access. Also on price they should be able to do a lot better if not through ebay etc. Also if you go straight to them they should be able to make a cage that doesent get in the way of the sunroof as well

I also have one, as mentioned its a great cage. Its a very tight fit to the shell, much better than the OMP or sparco cages that I've seen. Dave at tornado is a top bloke as well, very helpful and really quick turnaround as well, not to mention a very good price. Sound like their salesman but I really was impressed. Mine was the MSA kit but I asked for a removable rear diagonal as you can see in the pics rather than the cross.

That cage looks very well put together.
Those pipe intersection clamps are very "Safety Devices" like. That would be the other company I would recommend for a bolt in cage. They list them for both sunroof and none sunroof cars too.
I installed a Safety Devices cage in my mk2 and it fitted perfectly.

Not a fan of the bolt in sparco and omp cages myself.

I shall be giving them a call next week some time then as that looks the dogs danglies and I can have one made to my spec, so I can have a harness bar and B pillar brace etc.

Mec how much was yours if you dont mind me asking? and was it including fitting?

    cheers

    Karl.

Mine was 435 for the cage (less because of the single rear diagonal), 80 for powder coating and 200 fitting. one thing to note, the cage is a very tight fit and the dash, rear quarter panel cards, rear seats and other bits might need modifying if you're going to keep them.

wish I'd gone for a harness bar now, mistakenly thought I could keep the car practical but that's not going to happen!

Ahh not too bad then, was the 200 for the fitting inc the dash removal, cutting and re-fitting or did you do that your self? can you still remove your rear door cards with the cage in? as I plan to get mine flocked soon but not sure if it will be before or after the cage comes. (theres no rear seats so no worries there as so long as it clears my sun roof I am happy  I think my final spec will be

MSA cage with X in rear hoop, harness bars, X door bars and lower rear brace... that should be enough for what I want with out being OTT

now I just need to work out how I will explain it to Mel.... as I am ment to be saving [:$]

i took it in stripped , that was a noisy drive to derby! the dash is pretty easy to trim. rear quarter cards do go in and out with some cutting and persuading, its a very tight fit, its right up against the door seals

Okay not a prob, can I be a pain and ask for a pic of where it goes through the dash? as I wouldnt mind knowing how much of floacked dash I need to cut [:^(]

thanks for the info on the rear door cards, nice to know I can get them in and out of needed.

FWIW, I've seen one person upgrading from the OMP to the Tornado in the Mk2 Golf Championship, citing the far better door bar design.

You probably know they are restricted to 6 point attachment only, so they're ordering off a more limited menu.

good to know that they are trusted by the racers.

I also found out today the new lad at work has a friend who had tornado build a cage for his mk2 escort and said the build was second to non, so I am yet to hear a bad word about them,

also the G/f has said I can have the cage fitted as it will help stop me being mangled should the worse happen. so all round thumbs up

Looking for a mK2 cage at the moment and hear nothing but good things about these.
Did you go anywhere with this?

I want a cage that fits behind the dash rather than infront of it.
Also have a sunroof in the way!

Comprehensive cage but very heavy and does require removal of dash.

can you quantify the "very heavy" part ? i thought the tubing would all be 45mm x 2.5mm, unless you go for CDS type which is lighter but obviously far more expensive and not comparable.

same question about why its heavy applies i guess though.

It doesnt give a weight but it cant be much more then the other like safety devices etc. Using all the same tubing?

Without spending silly ammounts i cant see any other option if i want it to fit tight.
