Toyo R888 SG compound, a lot softer than GG - Take Note!

    Hi Guys,

I just thought that I should mention my error when I bought Toyo R888 SG Super Soft Compound tyres!

I imagined the SGs to be similar to the Yoko A032r Soft Compounds that I've used before, unfortunately this is not the case! The SG's are super soft, designed for hillclimb or sprints where immediate traction is required i.e there no chance of heating the tyres before your slot.
As I found, after 3 laps on Anglesey circuit, they begin to over heat and seriously shed the tread quickly! I had to call it a day by 1pm [:^(] But I did have fun up to then [:D]

Bottom line is, don't buy R888 SG's for trackdays!!! R888's are great, just not the SG's!

I'm tempted to argue that the Toyo website is not 100% clear on this point, although having spoken to them...... I got nowhere!!

I agree, it's not too obvious.

I was only aware of the soft SG tyre from when I was writing those race championship regs - but had to clarify which ones to put in the regs, since the website wasn't that clear.

It talked about the GG being 'medium soft', later corrected to 'medium hard', but none of the rest of the webpage text has changed since November.

Cheers for seconding that. The info is out there, just not on the Toyo site.

I ordered the normal ones, then spotted the SG's and assumed that those 'must' be the ones that people were raving about, so paid extra to get those, what a mistake! My mistake but not helped by the lack of info on the Toyo site!

Good Luck! If anything, avoid long stints! Maybe limit yourself to 5 laps at a time?? Assuming you're doing a trackday? Where at btw?

For reference, the in pics above, the inside edge is worn down beyond the tyre depth warning marker.

They are very good as far as I've seen. 20vKid on here has had 7/8 trackdays out of his and he's no lightweight (in attitude, not pie eating). My SG's lasted half a day - Suuuuper soft!!!

My plan was to use them as my regular tyres as I don't use it so much anyway. I'd hoped they'd at least last a year. I think the regular R888's would last that long.

I might bet some VR6 BBs wheels and stick some 888's on them for track days then keep my standard GTI wheels with knangkangs super hard have no grip what so ever but last years on for road use
