    Hi,
    Mk 1 GTi - 1.6 with 5 speed gearbox

When travelling am getting a noise from the transmission
I say transmission because if I switch the engine off and coast the noise remains.

The gearbox output seals and bearings have recently been replaced as have the cv joints.

The noise which becomes apparent at speeds in excess of 15/20MPH and is at its worst at 40 and above I would best describe at a low rumble and similar to the sound that one would get driving on a flat tyre but not as loud.

Any suggestions as to possible cause would be very much appreciated.

    Thank you

are you sure its from the box and not a wheel bearing or cv joint?

    Following Jonny's checks
I would start by dropping the tranny oil
Condition can be gauged by its appearance.]
    Its a service item anyway
020 CR boxes are getting scarcer, so £80 worth of bearings and some labour for a rebuild is an investment, in my opinion

I would say that it is from the wheel end rather than the gearbox
    Thank you
