Hello, i know that this topic has been discussed many times, but i can't find any place to source that parts, all the threads are old. Please can you point me on some sellers? Thanks
aye the scch ones are very good but i think he has a mk3 with 5 stud hubs Alex he would need tapered ones Rob T had one's made didn't he would be good for inspiration
Sorry - as pm, they were a one-off and I understand were thrown in the bin by the last owner of the car who wanted to go rallying and he thought they were not strong enough to survive hitting a curb......
boy sounds like a bit of a twit he could of added a brace from the extender up to the rod end location did you not tell him good drivers don't hit curbs
Do you have all the info on taper, how long you want the extender, which spherical bearing you wish to use, accurate dimensions of the wishbone plate, & info on upright (wheel bearing housing/knuckle/whatever you want to call it) material?
I bought mine from eBay user brahoy, could be worth asking if he has any more. They'll need welding into the hub.
Sent him an email So you guys mean that this is not working on my setup? https://www.bolt-action.nl/product/vw-mk1-mk2-mk3-19mm-balljoint-extender/
30mm won't be enough, as the tie rod would need to attach to the middle of the arm on the hub. Mine are close on 40mm, and I don't think they're quite long enough. If you use extenders, you also need to lower the tie rods, otherwise you'll have horrendous bump steer. The most common way of doing this is getting something like the Compbrake kit, and mounting the tie rods on the bottom of the arm. What you need to do is measure the thickness of the tie rods you're going to use, as well as the thickness of the arm they mount to. The ball joint spacer then needs to lower the arm the same amount. This will ensure the arm and tie rod are lowered the same amount.
Just in case this thread attracts Scirocco/mk1 Golf and mk2/3 4 stud Golf owners, Epytec are now doing BJ extenders. They are 25mm but I believe the blurb says they can make custom sizes: http://www.epytec.de/kategorien/fahrwerkstechnik/
i run the 19mm version of these with the track rod flip http://www.hoylesbespokedesigns.bigcartel.com/products Not had any issues yet and bump steer not been an issue (though at my ride height i'm not sure you'd notice!)
I'm genuinely curious into the reasons you want the extenders. I understand the theory, but don't have any myself and have never thought "oh, I wish I had those fitted...."
It means you can lower the car an extra 2" without messing up the roll center. Lower car = lower CoG = better cornering. As a test, lower your car an extra 2". You'll find it understeers massively, and the front will fall over, lifting the inner rear wheel a lot. You'll also have bump steer. ETA: I could really feel the difference on mine after I fitted them. The front doesn't want to fall over, so I have far more confidence in the mid corner handling. You're welcome to take mine for a drive next time. :thumb:
isnt there a type which throws the pivot point forward to increase castor???? or am i getting mixed up with something else?
No, that's not a good idea. You really need to keep these straight as the forces through them are quite high. Remember, the entire weight of the car goes through these. You can move the pivot point with a combination of other arms and hubs from a Mk3.
Had to log in to comment on these. Absolute effing rubbish being sold through a shop on facebook. No material spec. No heat treatment , and basically stock bar turned/Miller to suit. Had a set in through the workshop recently and was un impressed! The track rod flip kit was even worse. Machined/tapered inserts that were advertised as ' drill to size' but we're under size the start and would have been loose in a reamed hole, let alone a drilled hole!! Absolute sh it!! If this chaps banging them out on cnc them his machines are not upto UKAS or NAMAS or even ISO standards !!!
