Hi, I am trying to finish the setup on a newly replaced 020box. I have used the gearshift alignment template and all gears are selectable however the gear-lever does not self centre. What controls the centering of the gear stick and it is an easy thing to resolve?

Any help would be much appreciated

The gear shift shaft controlls the self centering, you need a 27mm 6 point tool to remove the end cap and the shifter assy.

Could be a number of reasons why its not returning.

Put gearbox in neutral before removing the shifter.

Keithmac. Thanks for the reply. We’ll get a six point tool tomorrow. Hopefully when it is out I’m sure it will all be obvious to even me.
This gearbox is an earlier one that we bought years ago and told (!) that it was all good. It maybe only stiff from age but somehow I doubt it.
    Thank again.

Might be worth a run round the block with fresh oil inside it to loosen it up?.

Yes, like that idea as I think, like you, strip down is the last resort.
I have a spare late 16V 020 2Y box which I hope to get checked and rebuilt as necessary over the coming winter. When removed it was in good order with no crunching or extraneous noises so hopefully all it will need is a thorough check and a set of new seals, possibly a pushrod, a lever and a clutch release bearing.

    Anyway thanks again.

No worries, mine was an unknown so I've stripped it and to be fair gears are in good order but it needed all bearings replacing and 3rd gear Synchro ring.

Sounded a bit rough when span by hand.

Think the middle tang on the shift shaft is bent as well, will have to compare it to the one out of my other gearbox.

Hopefully a quick drive will sort yours out!.

The tang is supposed to have a twist in it.
When you say self centering you still need to put the gearestock into neutral manually. If it’s in neutral and not centre you have worn bushings.

Marty, Thanks for the info. The box is in neutral and if you push the gear level in to
the 1/2 plane or the 5th plane it does not move ( spring) back to the central 3/4 plane. This not the end of the world so when this car is eventually fully mobile I am going to run it and see if it does loosen up. If not then I may come calling to see if you will do me a gearbox refresh/rebuild. ( A full check on such things as bearings, synchromeshs and seals etc.). However we do want to have some fun first with the car as its been laid up for tooooo long.
The car has at last been fired up complete with your lightened flywheel. (Thanks) but there is no exhaust other than a four branch manifold. God the noise!!
Wiring wise the K-Jet fuel system now works with the DTA but as yet no tachometer. I think this will be difficult.
    Anyway thanks again.
    All the best
    Nick
P.S. Should have asked if you still do gearbox repairs etc.
