Finally got the LSD sorted for the 02M gearbox (Leon Cupra) so need to get round to fitting it.

The nearside driveshaft needs to be shorter, so does anyone know which one is a straight fit so I can just drop the 02M into a 1991 Mk2 16V?

    Oh, and VWD40 - don't say get an 02S instead - I know the 02M is heavier :p

    Cheers

I've not figured that out yet. I was hoping someone else who's already done a 20vT conversion with an 02M 'box could tell me

Very few conversions around - I've been looking for years and have never seen one in the flesh.

    Bespoke shafts generally.

02M in the silver syncro with the 1.8T, I had the shafts custom made, couldn’t find anything with the right CV’s that were the right length. They are still sat in a corner with the box, the 4x4 02M though

    Yep, certainly remember the car.

Slightly OT, but interestingly I was chatting to Andy Waite (white Mk1 10-sec car) at Inters. He moves the engine across, and I think it's to do with reducing the angles on that short shaft as much as poss, by making it longer.

It does, I did away with the OE mounts on the subframe and removed the towers so the angle was better for the shaft and used the MK4 mounts on the inner wings, a much better and easier way of fitting tie 02M. Otherwise the inner CV on the N/S fouls the tower unless the angle is altered.

Was using the Mk4 mount on the inner wing a PITA, or did you just fabricate a bracket for it to sit on? Battery and washer bottle are in the boot, so that's not a problem.

    Cheers

All this headache for an extra gear Mook, I wish you'd listen. There's nothing wrong with the 02J!

If that's what this is all about, get a 6-speed 02S (02A/J with an extra gear).

You won't break one in normal use. It's repeated standing starts that kills them anyway.

Chris I've already been through all this with Mook but he's set on doing it! An 02J won't be an issue with the power Mook will be running.

I've hunted for the past four months for one and I'm fecked if I can find an 02S anywhere - unless you've got any ideas.

Oh, and standing starts/drag racing isn't my thing - tracks only.

Mike - I've already got the 'box so I'll use it if I can if sticking it in isn't a load of grief

You deciding on that now as well

I'm building it for 350 but only running 270 for the rest of the year.

Get the feelers out on the forums and scrappies.

The 2-300 premium you may (but may not) get stuck with for an 02S will come off the bespoke 02M driveshaft bill

The power you're running will not worry the 02S. The Reeves Mk1 runs an 02S and has no shortage.

Hate to be so abrupt, but I cannot stand watching when a piece of firm advice will save a world of fabrication and grief. [:$]

No worries, Chris - I like to say it how it is

I've got a watch running on fleabay, but most of them come back clueless when you ask them to confirm the 02 code.

I've only kicked this one off again mate because Silverstone was stupidly frustrating when it rained

Find me a decent 02S and I'll buy you a pint. Of Jaegermeister :p

I'm running an O2J in mine, and wouldn't want an O2M/S, as the gearing would be too short.

Theres a yank company somewhere who sells shafts for an 02M swap into mk2. cant remember exactly who it is but im sure a quick search on the 'tex will find it for you. Im sure they arent cheap mind.

I havnt seen anyone who has managed to find a pair of genuine vag shafts of the right length for the swap but one would think it must be possible somehow, possibly the option of widetrack wishbones may provide a solution.

Good luck, ill definitely be watching the outcome on this.
