Hi showing my ignorance but is it worth doing a wide track conversion on a mk2 and what is involved as I presume its a mk3 front subframe and rear beam do you use mk3 hubs and steering rack as well as drive shafts. I am in a position where I am about to break a mk 3 8v gti and was considering what bits to keep for my mk2 gti, also about to get a 2001 mk3.5 2L golf cabriolet with 4 stud hubs that I thought Ii would break for spares and wondered wether this would be a better option for a wide track conversion, as well any other parts that would transfer to a mk1 or 2 golf gti. I believe a mk3.5 cab is a mk3 cab with a mk4 front end styling any information would be very appreciated thank you.
use all MK3 part it makes the job easier, i forgot about the steering coupling uj on mine but you need the mk3 one too.
I would say it is, I definitely noticed the difference after. feels a lot more 'planted' is the only way I can describe it
Apart from the obvious increase in track, doesn't the widetrack setup also have slightly more castor angle? That might explain the 'planted' feeling.
Would be interested to hear a definitive answer on caster Heard it mentioned before and read a fairly in depth thread here about it but it seemed to digress and get too complicated for me so I never really gave it any more thought It does sound promising, can anyone say conclusively? Preferably in small enough words for me to understand
the 4 stud setup is the same as the mk2 in terms of castor etc, the 5 stud moves the ball joint further forward and so seems to be rated by those in the know for this reason. same as you threads like that get too complicated for me so I just glaze over and move on
well i don't know what mk2's run on castor as standard, but i can tell you what my mk2 with mk3 widetrack is on castor using everything from the mk3 3.00degree on the dot according to our john bean 4wheel alignment machine at work (y)
Coulds be wrong but I think 5 stud arms and 4 stud hub carriers leave the wheel in the wrong place in the arch. Hence why you need to whole lot.
i used 5-stud with some corrado speedlines i got cheap :-) plus it enabled me to run the 288mm brakes from my mk3 donor, which i must say i am very impressed with. tbh i think if i was going to run 4-stud now i would literally just either get my center flange redrilled or press some 4-stud ones in with new bearings. saying that, could i get some centre flanges drilled to take 4x100 AND 5x100 or 102? there seems to be a lot more choice of wheels that are 5x102.
