I was wondering how i could find out the year of the engine in my car as its had a convrsion from a 1.6 ryder to a 1.8 8v gti? And i need to no the year of the engine! I also have no idea off where or what car the engine come out off, if it helps its code is EV, i mean im guessing theres only gonna be so many years that they where produced from and till. Cheers
An EV is a Mk2 Golf GTI 8v. There are sometimes cast numbers under cylinder 2, like here: "90" - that's the year of the casting. For a sense check, it should be between 1984 and 1987. Some of the earlier blocks weren't marked there from what I've seen, or weren't marked at all. Look out for sundial-type castings like these instead, below where the distributor is, like on this DX, which is Mk1 Golf GTI:
It's a competition engine from this Audi 80 here. They're all the same derived VW-Audi blocks, but it was easy to pluck that out out as an example as I knew where it was.
Phew, i was looking at it thinking hmmm my engine doesnt look like that cause i thought it was the 1.8 8v gti. Just looked at that thread for the Audi aswell serious bit of kit! Cheers for the advice anyhow.
There should be a year on the casting stamp on the head which is probably he easiest to see. Just above the water outlet in the above pic. Obviously the head could have been changed but if you can give us the casting number from the head (left hand side) and the year then it will help identify the engine. As Chris mentions they were only made between ceratain years. Basically EV is from an 1.8 8v K jet fuel injection GTI.
An EV would normally be an early-mid 80s engine, but could have been replaced for a reconditioned or 'service' engine at some point. They're pretty tough if looked after though, so could well be the original one.
Right, on the head there is in this order: 037.103.373 ----- to the right of that is 3. ME Then on the block there is EV 103 257 * Hope this helps and hope its a gti! Cheers
