Happy 40th Birthday, VW Golf

40 years ago today the first VW Golf rolled off the assembly line in Wolfsburg

The ‘Typ 17’ Golf had the job of practically saving Volkswagen, as Beetle sales declined sharply. It worked. By October 1976 they’d produced a million – on the way to 6.8 million Mk1s. By 2002, 2,1517,415 Golfs were made, surpassing the Beetle and by last Summer 2013, counting Mks 1 – 7, they’ve made 30 million, far eclipsing the Beetle success story of the world’s most successful car

Today the Golf is made in Wolfsburg, Zwickau, Foshan (China), and Puebla (Mexico).

This weekend, Volkswagen are celebrating at Techno-Classica Essen

They’ve pulled a 3-km Swallowtail example out of the Museum to put on show:

For anyone with a Golf near this old, road-tax free life does indeed begin at 40 Well, early next week when the Road Tax exemption kicks in.

And the full line up
