How to lay paving stones?

Paving stones are one of the most popular materials that we use to decorate the area around our house. The aesthetics and usability of such a surface speak for themselves. But how is the paving stone arranged? This work is not as easy as it seems, because every step is very important and must be done carefully. What exactly does the paving stone laying process consist of?

Proper surface preparation
Before we start laying paving stones, we must have a place where it will be laid. This place cannot be neglected, therefore it is necessary to prepare it properly. The first stage of the work is digging, i.e. removing the soil from the place where we want to lay the paving stones. The primary soil is usually dug to a depth of 20 to 40 cm .

After the trough, it is necessary to level the terrain. It is at this stage of the work that a later image of the entire surface is formed, i.e. bends, switches, etc. Also, we must not forget about creating targeted slopes and drainage in natural soil. When leveling the terrain, you also need to take care of the correct slope of the surface. Usually it is from 0.5 cm to 3 cm for each meter of paving stones.

Foundation and ballast construction
An integral element of laying paving stones is the foundation device. The foundation is a building layer that determines the stability of the road surface, as well as its long–term operation. To create a foundation, natural or crushed aggregates are most often used, which are laid on a hardened surface. After laying the material, it should be compacted to an appropriate degree.

Depending on the purpose of the surface, the base layer may have a different thickness. In gardens, 20 cm is usually enough, and in places where cars will move ankle-deep, a foundation 35-40 cm thick should be made. Of course, the thickness of the foundation will also be affected by the type of soil and the water table. Only after the foundation is ready, you can make a frame.

The next step will be the manufacture of ballast. For this purpose, stone screening or washed sand is used. The thickness of the ballast is 3-5 cm. The ballast should be leveled and slopes should be made in it, but it is not tamped.

Folding cubes
After the foundation is properly prepared, it is time for one of the last stages – laying paving stones. If we are collecting cubes from several different pallets, it would be good to mix the cubes together to avoid differences in surface color. In addition, when laying paving stones, do not forget to leave gaps between them, which will be filled with sand at the end. In no case should the paving stones be filled with sand and cement, since during the rain the components can firmly stick together.

Excess sand should be removed from the paved surface before vibration, and then pour cement mortar again to fill the cracks. The size of the seams is greatly influenced by the type of paving stones, the method of surface finishing, as well as its purpose. When placing the cubes, do not leave too small gaps between the individual cubes, as they can rub against each other, which will lead to their crumbling.
