Right found the co adjuster screw with the snap-on 3mm Allen but my adjuster will not budge any suggestions on the the best way to free up. I’ve currently just used wd40 and I’m goner let it sit. Anyone had the same problem

Close up of the screw itself, plus the arm it threads through with everything else stripped away to give you an idea in your minds eye of what's in there.

It and the arm pictured sit within a larger arm (not pictured) which has a forked clamp into which the dished end of the screw is pressed (it slots in from the side so can't be pressed in /out again without dismantling the arms).

The screw is soft metal, it'll round out very easily.

The portion of the screw that the allen key sits in is probably only 2mm deep, so not much and you can understand why even a little dirt will quickly block it.

Ordinarily the screw should turn easily, if it's free.

Don't force it, if it'll not move something's wrong.

WD40's useful but I've found a dedicated penetrant like 'Plusgas' will work when it and others don't.

All I’ve got to hand is wd40 but will try plusgas next time I was also thinking of adding heat via a gas solder flame on the screw top and bottom as what’s sitting in the head was dried oil probably from the breather and heat might help soften the dried oil

That’s bloody expensive for an adjuster bolt. Wow, oh well vice grips and club hammer to the rescue and if that don’t work of to the breakers and the if nothing I’ll have to buy one

You could cut the bolt flush to the toothed wheel then drill it out

Manage to sort the adjuster bolt out with a hammer!
But I have a new problem changing the gearbox oil on fill up through the speedo I’d dropped the speedo gear into the gearbox and it disappeared, I know people say leave it and let the gearbox mash it up but has anyone had any luck retrieving it back through the drain plug as I would prefer removing it.

a grabber thru speedo hole is your best bet, and bright torch + patience.

its pot luck, may find gearbox eats it happily, or you may find a chink of plastic wedges itself in the worst possible place and locks the box

Thanks. I’ll have to give it another try this weekend but this time with the car on the floor so I can get even closer and try and get my head right down there

IMG_4079.jpeg IMG_4080.jpeg Manage to remove the speedo gear had to remove the oil so I can see better!!
But whilst there I found a coolant leak, does anyone know if you can still buy these new as mine is rotten and the aluminium is disintegrating, probably still usable but I’d rather replace it now

Looks like the heater by-pass valve retro fitted by VW to combat the exploding matrix problem.

If it is it's no longer needed and a current day matrix now solves the problem without it

You were lucky getting the speedo drive out , I spent ages trying to get mine out and just thought sod it, "get the box out and tip it upside down!" Think we did it (2 of us) in about an hour!(in workshop with 2 post ramp)

Yeah as above they are heater bypass valves the later mk2s didn't have them, if you fit a mk3 heater matrix you're sorted.
Might be an issue finding the uncut heater hoses though.

Wish I knew this earlier I cut two silicone hoses up to fit these in, oh well I’ll have to find a replacement valve now.
I got the speedo gear out relatively quick put the car in gear let it run for a minute, drained oil and it popped back into view and with a set of 45 degree long reach unhooking fishing tongs manage to get it in about 20 mins, absolute life saver. Tried one of those long reach grabber things first and all that kept doing was pushing it away
