the 2e2 is awesome, you shoudl do your best to fix it. I do actually have a used 1.6 auto weber in my garage, only problem is fuel nipple is snapped off. plus the donor carb flange was so bad i just had to pull hard to rip it off, so the idle and co settings will all be way off I expect

Ah too bad. I'm not against the Pierburg at all, it's a decent unit and I'm not looking for gains as such (the car's never gona be fast I didn't buy it for that). Just looks, sounds and goes better with a weber on the whole

Enjoying your 'can do' approach here mate.
Nice to see someone not saying "2e2, oh, that's too hard for me"

Been DIYing for a few years now, mainly vauxhalls but i've had a few Vdubs now (including my first ever car a 1974 beetle)
I've learned most of what I know now by jumping in and getting on with it

Well it's been a good news, worse news kinda day

Firstly the new carb mount arrived this morning

    rkbpBCW.jpg

    Secondly (and not good)

Got to my work carpark and noticed my N/S rear passenger footwell was basically a big puddle

    cq8O9LN.jpg

Checked under the boot carpet and it all seems ok.
Not checked under the front scuttle panel yet as it's pitch black, raining and my 3 year old lad's in bed.
I'll be replacing the inner door seal as the bottom is a bit crunchy and perished, and I'll replace the door membrane as even a fingertip check told me it's ruined. I'll probably just change all of them.
Then the rear carpets gonna have to come out for a clean and to dry :thumbd:

Best news. I'm working all day tomorrow and then on holiday for 4 days as of monday so I've bought a waterproof car cover for while I'm away.

You can always count on finding a MK3 based vehicle, in pretty good condition anywhere in Europe.
Quite a lot of MK2 and MK3 non GTI cars still alive today!

Made a move on sorting the water leak yesterday.

Started by checking and clearing out the drains and plenums under the scuttle.

As you can see, pretty messy. But not as bad as I expected

    Cleaned up a bit

Then I removed the rear n/s door card and the old membrane. The bottom had come away from the door and the whole thing needed replacing

So tonight I decided to dismantle the new (old) Bilstein rear shocks I got. They could use a refurb.
    Here we go...

    Springs compressed of course.

No updates for a while so apologies. Whether's been miserable and work keeps coming.

Good news is the leak appears to have been fixed (touch wood), with the new door membrane and clearing under the scuttle. No fresh water ingress.

Today I finally got the new carb gasket fitted. Even managed to do it without completely removing the carb itself. Just a couple of hoses (one of which had a nice big split in it (coolant hose from carb to manifold)

Sorry didn't take loads of pics, trying to beat the rain
    So to begin:

    JDQxMVy.jpg

As you can see, I could literally lift the carb up while still attached to the old gasket! Lots of leaking fumes

    V12d1xY.jpg

Old coolant pipe (with split) off and replaced with new

    bbNwq1c.jpg

    Old vs new gaskets

    uFe9ZO9.jpg

    Baqd5J4.jpg

    vxh824W.jpg

Should make a nice difference to power, fuel consumption and cabin smell!

Hey thanks man, apologies I've been away from the site for a bit.

    So to recap,
I've had to swap the entire carb as it was ruined and I'm still having issues with cold starts.
Possibly the auto-choke, possibly a vac leak. But it will be sorted (fingers crossed).

Also ordered a new sunroof outer seal for an extortionate amount. But it's on it's way
