Parkers says 3695 retail, 3250 private good and 2295 private poor.

    Thanks, that was quick!

This one's up in the local Free Ads for 3650 which is a tad high for a private sale i think. It's been for sale for a couple of weeks I think so I'm sure I'll knock him down. Hoping it's as good as he said on the phone!

i think parkers do over estimate the car prices a bit, glass's guide is the one to look at.

Do the Mk3's have the factory stickers inside the boot like the Mk2's? Any tips for testing out the ABS (make sure that the light goes out after starting up?) & anything else I should look out for? I'll check the rear door hinges etc

What about the digital service interval indicator on the dash (this is new to me 'cos I'm a Mk2 man! [:$] ) - when the ignitions on what should it read (IN 0 ?) & does it display the time to the next service?

Went to see the car this evening. 1st thing I noticed was that the drivers seat was worn at the seat bolster & the metal frame was showing through - not too promising a start! Milage was 72k, so either it had been mistreated a bit, or the milage wasn't genuine.

Noticed as I turned the ignition on, IN02 flashed up on the dash display - what does this mean, that a service is due?

Had a quick look around it & there was rust by the hinges of the rear doors on both sides, and apart from a slight ding in the rear of the roof & a bent bee sting aerial (caused by a roofrack I think) the bodywork looked ok, & the metallic black paintwork shone in the sun. Rear bumper was scuffed at the top, just above the towbar (which would be handy for my boat & trailer)

Tyres were a cheap mixture & all close to the limit, and the inside edges of the fronts were bald & one had the wires of the carcass protruding! Engine was grimy (which is good 'cos it hadn't been tarted up for the sale, so was possibly genuine) but ran well. The oil filter wasn't a genuine VAG one. He'd had a local garage to service it, but hadn't had the cambelt changed.

All electrics (4 x windows) & sunroof worked fine. But there was no alarm or immobiliser.(Forgot to try the mirrors) & the ABS seemed to slow us down well from speed.

He was asking 3650 which looking at the car was well overpriced for a P reg '96. We said the car was worth 2900 tops since it needed taxing (had 12 months MOT), 4 x new tyres were needed & an cat 2 immobiliser would be required at the least, costing 120 ish (but preferably a 250 - 300 cat 1 alarm).

Left him to think about it, but i think I'll give this one a miss. I'm sure another will pop up.

Just thought i'd give an update - Bought a '97 P plate 3 door 8v in red tonight for 2500!

Lovely original condition, 2 owners, with a stack of receipts, Sony cd player, recent service & cambelt (main dealer & specialist history), new shocks & 92K on the clock.

Mum & Dad are really pleased, and I was quite impressed with it too. Being a Mk2 fan I wasn't expecting too much after hearing the bad press & slating of the Mk3, but it goes well enough & is comfortable & quiet in comparison to my '91. All electrics are nice (sunroof/mirrors/windows) & the ABS is impressive!

Here's a taster, more pics under the Members Motors section. Thanks for the advice!

I think its Flash Red but I'm not entirely sure. I'll pop over to their house tomorrow for a good gander, but I think it's a brighter shade than Tornado Red
