Hi chaps as some of you will know the 20vt is in and running bleed the clutch at the weekend but have a brake. Fluid leak from the poxy compensator valve but in the
Mean time I've been having a play with the gear stick lol

Anyway I hate the feel of it !!!!

I think it feels just as bad the original 8v rod shifter

Been looking into the idea of changing the shifter, cables and tower over to the o2j
Which looks fairly straight forward ? Famous last words lol

Had a reef round the web and read a few bits but my main question is how difficult is it to remove the 02a &02j shifter tower out if the box ?

Easy, two bolts hold it onto the box. Undo the cables and bolts and it will just lift out...covered in oil.
The only things to remember is there are two different sizes of bottom locators. Just make sure you have the right size or you will need to drain the box to change it.

its the vw logo bit on the bottom with 2 bolt holes, to save any chance of it beign wrong take that off the donor car as well. the thing to remember about the 02j is they arnt all the same! early ones are pretty much same as the mk3 stuff so avoid those you only want the later setup. there are 2 types of late setup also pin and ball end linkages but all the parts interchange you just need the right cable ends to match the linkages on the shifter tower. the ends come off easy peasy on the later 02j shifter cables so no worries there

    some piccies here:

well worth fitting the 02j stuff..its much nicer

just measure the bottom of the old tower shaft and compare to the 02j measurement , and make sure you take the cable bracket off the o2j car too

Got home and noticed the nylon runner was in 3 pieces Balls !!

Can I replace that part ?

I got the shifter which has pins I think same as the link pics from rj

Fitted it all in and wasn't to much aggro at all

How does the bracket fit to gearbox for some reason I only managed to fit the middle one as the other 2 don't line up

You can get the nylon runner now from dealer separate now.

Bracket should line up with 3 bolts. If you didn't take it off cables, it should be clear. Points to tower at an angle. See link in RJs post

Yea. Clip off and push out. Had an issue with a relay lever before. Removed nylon bushes and had to ream out the hole as it was full of gunk that caused the bushes to be tight on the lever shaft. Once done replaced bushes and coated with white grease. The relay lever affects the left/right movement. HTH
