Remember there's two Mk3 1.6's as well - the earlier 75 bhp is, I presume, a similar engine to the Mk2. It's an 'old skool' 8v like the 1.4 and 1.8. From '96 VW brought out a new 1.6 16v engine, with 100bhp, which is a very different beast. It's almost as quick as an 8v GTI, though it produces the power very differently - ie. it's all top end and no torque.
th reason i wanted to know is that i was wondering if mk2 golf gti 8v parts such as crank, pistons, cam etc can be put onto a 1.6 mk3 like they can on a 1.6 mk2, does anyone know? ty.
No, I just posted it for a giggle.... Yes, it is, and a pretty good engine it is. Not enough torque for my liking but a very willing revvy little engine.
