Does anyone know what changes were made to MK4 Golf GTi 1.8 20V Turbo's to change them from 150bhp to 180bhp? Does the 180 use a bigger turbo or are engines identical save for a chip change to up the boose pressure?
Thinking of getting one and wondered if I could get a 150bhp for less money and then just have it chipped to make it the same.
    All help appreciated :)

omg! why is this such a recurring question! lol

The 180 uses a ko3s unit, as opposed to the ko3 unit.
The mapping will also be different.

If it was me, id think about my taget bhp before buying. If i only wanted 180, then id go for a 150.
If i wanted 220hp, id go for the 180hp model.

Sorry mate didn't know it was such a common question, looks like a 180 it is then. Is 220 bhp a reliable stage of tune and how do high mileage engines respond to being chipped ie 80k+

Only the later 150bhp 1.8T's remap to ~210bhp. I think the <2002 cars remap to around 190bhp.

    no prob- just funny really.
220 was just an approx figure i plucked, not significant, nor is 210 hp or 230, unless you specifically aim for a generic remap.
You really want to make a long term plan of what you want to do and can afford. When i was thinkin of 220+hp, i wasnt just thinking in terms of remap, but others mods such as intercoolers.
Also bear in mind, if you increase engine power, you should really upgrade the brakes too.
Stick 'mk4' into the search and do some digging around- common topic.

my 1.8t aum lump. Is it really 180 BHP?

I have a 1.8t 2001 aum lump, which everybody claims is a 180 bhp version with a k03s. However im not sure that it is..

This is the serial number on the turbo.

That part number you have there is a KO3 as KO3s' have 052 as the next number, and part number 06A145703D i know this as i have a 150bhp AGU golf and have just bought a KO3s to upgrade, with the mods i have done and help from Custom Code i should hope to see 240bhp, but i agree with whats been said before id always upgrade brakes before going for bigger hp and with that in mind i have just fitted Porsche Boxster callipers and have a vented rear disc conversion set up for when i get home.

As whats been mentioned before also the earlier AGU engines can be chipped upto 196bhp whereas the later 01> can go straight upto 210bhp with the right chip.

I thought that the AGU engine was better due to having a better head? :)

thanks for that, its what i thought, a lot of people believe the the aum lump has 180 bhp and a k03s. qpeng believe you can this lump is capable of 230bhp, but without a k03s it will be nearer 200bhp. So a ko4 upgrade it is then :) or a garrett eliminator in gt28rs spec that fits in exactly the same location ( no manifold needed) just injector upgrade and a map for 330-350 bhp. all in the package should cost around 1500 + a remap.
